Re: FS: 18650 Build Kit! Easy Assembly! Blu-ray or Red...
Hi, i'm sorry for posting such a newbie question... but I received jayrob's kit as a gift from my gf who knew I wanted to build one of these lasers. I honestly did not know much about what is needed, but I understood i need a driver and a module with the diode so I purchased the red diode in a module which is the Axis model. I also purchased the 18650 batteries and charger (which were very hard to get actually..) and I purchased the rkcstr adjustable driver. After reading the thread I see that folks are recommending running 2 cr123 batteries with a flexdrive for a red laser, is it possible to power a red laser with the combo I have purchased so far and this kit?
thanks much and many apologies for the newbie question
Re: FS: 18650 Build Kit! Easy Assembly! Blu-ray or Red...
In the first post of this thread, there are pictures and good detail of this build...
I designed this one for use with a FlexDrive. Mainly because of the single battery design. (18650)
But also because there is limited room inside the head. In the 'picture tutorial', I show how you can just mount the FlexDrive 'flat' on top of the pill, and there is plenty of room.
However, I have never tried to fit a rckstr. I'm sure that if you opened up the pill by drilling or grinding the top open, you should be able to make room for a rkcstr driver, and then you would use 2 X RCR123 for a red build...
Re: FS: 18650 Build Kit! Easy Assembly! Blu-ray or Red...
you can only run a flexdrive below ~5.8v unless you use a diode in series that drops the voltage down ~0.7v. for that kit go with the flexdrive and power it with the 18650 battery, you will not be able to power the rckstr driver with 3.7v because its a linear driver and will not have enough voltage, it needs +2.25v plus diode VF so for a red diode needs ~5.25 volts (inc rckstr) which the 18650 li-ion cannot provide. trust me mate, for that build, use the fllexdrive
Re: FS: 18650 Build Kit! Easy Assembly! Blu-ray or Red...
Thank you both for the quick response and your help!
I ended up buying 2 CR123A batteries from local staples and drilling the pill out to fit in the rkcstr driver. I noticed that the entire module would not fit despite drilling, but the driver fit perfectly with the bottom of the module removed and driver mounted directly to the diode. I set the driver for 300mA and fired up the laser, works perfectly and easily burns through black tape. Thanks again, im very happy with this setup. Fantastic kit jayrob!

Received my stuff on Monday, built it yesterday, and received my batteries today. Works great! Love the build. I put some heatsink grease between the axis and heatsink. My flexdrive is set at 419 mA for a LPC-815. With the 650-g lens modification it is very bright. When unfocused, it shows a few circles and when focused the dot has two lines extending out from it like this -o- but other than that I love the build.
