I never liked thermal compound...

It can work it's way onto the diode, and that would not be good.

A small amount can't hurt, but is must be used very sparingly...

Umm... I've used like 75% of a 1.5g tube LOL. Plenty between the heatsink and module and plenty between the driver and pill. I think it's really helped with transfer, I can feel the host getting warmer faster. I've just made sure to keep it away from any optics, getting this grease off glass is a pain.

Hey Jay, Can I use that heatsink for this kit with the stainless one as well or will it not fit right?

Hey Jay, Can I use that heatsink for this kit with the stainless one as well or will it not fit right?

I just tried and the diameter of the stainless is a little smaller than the black 18650 kit. Saw Jay has not responded yet and thought this might help.

In this pic you can see the black has a lip on the top of the heatsink for sitting in the host where the stainless does not have the lip since it is held in by the pill wedging it up against the lip on the front of the host.

Jay, I have a question-will it negatively impact heatsinking for me to move the aixiz module back a few mm in the heatsink so that the lens doesn't stick out too much?

In my opinion, no...

You will not be moving it back much at all. The set screw will still be pressing the module against the heatsink. Just not quite as near the diode, but I don't think it will make much difference at all. I have many of my personal builds like that...
