P.S. Why is your Dorcy a 655nm LED?  ;D

That was the first one I made a few years ago, unfortunatly it went along the Kipkay route of building lasers so after buying a 22x dvd writer and extracting the diode (not knowing abour LPF then this was all full price from shops) i then installed everything in a dorcy and had a great laser for about 2 hours, then just an expensive red torch :'( oh well learn by your mistakes, hey igor is that why you stopped blowing things up? got  tired of cleaning all the mud of things ::)

For lighting cigarettes, what you really want, is a pulsed laser at an "eye safe" wavelength.

Mechanical Q-switching with a solenoid should be adequate for such a use.

Think you can do that tiny machining for the bragging rights? :D

Go on somebody try it pleeaaasssee it would be awsome ;D

Yeah, i was making explosives as a kid. I made a hydrogen bomb once.. Not THE hydrogen bomb, just a bomb with hydrogen in it instead of powder. It was the loudest. :eek: But not the strongest.. The strongest one made mud rain on my mother's car..  ::)
heh... just saw this... fellow pyros, ignite!

I used to do water electrolysis, 2H[sub]2[/sub]O -> 2H[sub]2[/sub] + O[sub]2[/sub]
into a balloon [sub];-)[/sub]
in the garage
and then, with a candle on the end of a pool cue for a catalyst...
2H[sub]2[/sub] + O[sub]2[/sub] --> 2H[sub]2[/sub]O + BOOM!

good thing I'd opened the garage door ::)
hmm... wish I'd had a laser instead of that stick... [smiley=evil.gif]

next time, I'll do it GREEN: solar array for the electrolysis ;-)

I tried electrolysis, but it was too slow for my taste. I went the faster way. Hydrochloric acid + small pieces of aluminum in a bottle.. Baloon on top. ;)

The "fuse" was just newspaper, with the baloon on one corner, lit from the other corner. I was hiding behind the corner of the house before it went boom..  ;D

The bottle went boom as well.. Couldn't take the heat of the reaction..

Kids, don't try this at home!

200ma is a good round number for me Igor. Hopefully it will last awhile, but even if it doesn't I willing to chance it.
I want a good solid blu-burner :D

Chuck

200mA or 200mW? There's a difference.... ;)

If it's good with you, it's good with me. As i said, this is finally a diode that i am willing to set high, because i know it can take it. I think, that even at 200mW after a plastic lens, a 6x will last at least long.. If nothing else, at least long enough for the diode price to drop.. ;)

It won't last forever, and the power will gradually drop over time, not much, it's so slow, that it's hard to notice even on a meter. But man these diodes are tough!

As long as you understand what a higher power means, it's fine by me.. I definitelly don't want to deprive you of 405nm goodness.. ;)

In any case, i will send everyone on my 6x list an order summary request email, where you will give me your shipping address and any special wishes. Mainly the desired power. :) All the instructions will be in that email.

I'm just happy, that i finally have a diode, that will make good use of my driver, the heatsink/module and the build. The PHRs were almost freezing in there, and the driver was half a sleep most of the time...  ;D

P.S. I also think time has come, to reveal some new models i've designed in the last two months.. Some of you have seen them already. I will post them in a bit.

Those crystals aren't exactly free, unfortunately. At least not in a ready-to-pump form.

If you've got several people, you might get a GB going for a composite rod with passive Q-switch, though.

Suiram, Sam just wants a 405nm diode in a zippo casing..  ;D

Re: FS: >110mW PHR, >140mW 4x & >170mW 6x Blu-Rays

I strongly prefer not to use my name on any forums, Igor.

That aside, nothing wrong with giving him a 405nm diode in a zippo casing, if it'll make him happy. Give him two and a PBS, for good measure. 600mW for a second or so. Pair of meniscus lenses to tighten the beam. Never mind the eye safety concerns associated with operating a 405nm laser right next to the eye, with a movable, polished piece of metal so close to the beam.

I just think it would be cool to see an innovative approach.

Personally, I don't care if he uses a 405nm diode or a miniature TEA laser to light his cigarettes, so long as there's no line of sight to me. The notion of using a laser to start a fire isn't half bad in itself, but doing it with 405nm without a very clearly defined focal spot where there are no possibilities for reflection, seems like a less than sharp move, and the approach seems a bit primitive.

Besides, why only light cigarettes? ;)

Strongly agree. You might say, that's not too bright.

[quote author=jayrob link=1210968450/900#910 date=1230712353]Do you have the current settings for the above 3 examples?

I have two examples of 6X's at 190ish mA's. Both with Meredith glass lenses...

* 209mW's at 191mA's
* 224mW's at 192mA's
Jay

Anyway, if these 6x's were like my old one, [highlight]it would take 192mA for 175mW, 215mA for 200mW and 235mA for 225mW after a plastic lens..[/highlight] In fact, the latter is where my old 6x is currently at - 236mA, putting out 226mW after plastics or 261mW after medium custom lens or 278mW after short FL custom lens..

My old 6x has lost 8mW of power through degradation by now, i said it's gonna die any moment now, several times, but it just keeps surprising me with it's toughness! :eek:[/quote]

Thanks Igor, that's what I was wondering... I have only used Meredith glass lenses so far for the couple of 6X diode builds that I have done...

Wow, how much time now do you estimate your original 6X has on it at 236mA's? :eek:

Actually, most people don't pick up on that unless they already know my name, and I was in a hurry to register. But my concern isn't people I choose to interact with via PM (like Igor), it's that I don't like having it permanently attached to my name at Google and Internet Archive, both of which cache this site with no expiration time for their records. I don't like having to consider everything I say with an eye to posterity, as if writing a publication. And in one uncommon line of work I've been in, and may decide to return to, that sort of thing is highly relevant to the level of risk involved and the likelihood of getting security clearance. On other boards, there has been a Report button to deal with such matters of privacy, but not so here.

Thus, I pointed it out to Igor, since he can erase it from his post.

Thanks for compounding the problem.

I shouldn't have joined.

Jay

Well, my old 6x was at 198.6mA for months. Ever since i got it. I need to check how long that is.

When Amk announced the first 6x GB, i decided to torture it a little, and set it to 219mA. I had it there for a few weeks, until i noticed degradation. If the GB wasn't failing, i would have left it there, but i got scared, since the degradation obviously sped up (went from 213mW after plastics to 209mW in those two weeks - but i did use it a lot), so i turned it back down. Then i was saving it, until i would have some spare time for a plot.

I plotted it right after plotting the Nichia. If you remember, i plotted the 6x up to 250mA. That's a high current i would NOT recommend for a 6x. I definitelly won't plot the new ones that far. At least not those not meant for torture. I only did it cos this one was old, and i keep expecting it to die. But it keeps dissapointing me. In a good way.

After that plot i decided to set them both to the same power. The Nichia was at ~226mW (214mA), so i set the 6x to 236mA, which resulted in the sam power. But then i thought i noticed degradation in the Nichia, so i turned it down to 202mW. But the 6x seemed to be doing fine, so i returned the medium custom lens to the old queen (the 6x), and it did 261mW with it. :eek: That's still with a pretty beam! With a less pretty beam it's above 270 (short FL custom lens).

Anyway, the 6x has been at that power since that day. I just measured it. Still holding up..

Keep in mind, it's a lower efficiency 6x, which might theoretically, in some rare cases actually increase it's toughness. I will try to test this theory too.

hey igor, i didnt get a lot of money for christmas but i got a bunch of gift cards which im trying to get cash for, once i do i should have enough for a 4x. i might have to sell my dilda too :'( (this thing beats the crap out of the dilda so i wouldnt have any use for the dilda after i get one of your lasers) ill keep you posted on my financial situation.
