You can get the batteries cheaply and with free shipping at DX, as well as the chargers for them.

Post two on page one of this thread contains the links to the batteries for the mini gray laser. A pack of two is $6 (protected), and they'll last you "for ever".

Everything at DX has free shipping BTW. If you want me to include, i can, but i've heard Li-Ion batteries are not supposed to be shipped on airplanes..
I would rather see them shipped separatelly from the laser, just in case.

DX doesn't mind sending them by AirMail tho. And i've always received my orders in a week and a half from them.

An open can costs me 30 euro in Slovenia.

If you don't mind paying that, i would gladly supply one, mounted in an AixiZ module (wires and cap soldered on) with your driver, and even put it in a box if you want.

You are one dollar short for the batteries? If you buy the open can you mean, or what?

We have crazy stupid prices in Slovenia. I am so angry sometimes, when i see how cheap people from the US are getting these things, and i have to buy locally and pay almost twice that, or order internationally, and pay expensive shipping and custom fees and taxes on top.

I have one open can on my hands, meant for a future project. I might be able to convince someone from the US to buy me another drive and rip out the diode and send it to me... Do you want me to ask?

In that case it would probably cost you $30 with shipping to me. Then i could turn the one i have here into a laser for you for free and eventually i would get another from the US for myself...

BTW, the lens caps are not "glow in the dark", but black, and i can throw in as many as you like.. I could send you a battery, but i'm afraid to send it with the laser. I heard you're not supposed to send Li-Ions via AirMail, and i want to guarantee delivery.

And sending it separately would probably cost as much as a pack of two from DX. You will also need a $10 charger for them.. The same charger will be able to charge the 10440 batteries, the red laser would most likely use.

If you get the protected 14500 (AA size) batteries (don't get the unprotected ones in ANY case), i could make you a simple charger for them, but the charger would still require a "wall wart" AC/DC adaptor for power.. If you have one, it's an option. But it couldn't charge the (10440 batteries AAA size) or the 14250 (1/2 AA size) that i would use in the red....

I could make a charger for those as well, but it would take me more time.

I just hit the 76mW mark with the "weaker" diode in the prototype laser! 8-) 92mW before optics!

And the lens is a bit dirty or even scratched, which i noticed decreased the output by ~4mW, so i could actually be at 80mW with a fresh lens! Need to find me a clean lens and test some more. (also need to buy a new LensPen >)

Oh, and this is at 96.5mA. I'm sure some of my diodes will do the same power, or more at 90-92mA, since others are getting 80mW at these currents...

EDIT: The beam, focused at "infinity" (thick parallel beam) actually stings my skin!

hmm nice people sometimes bring tears to my eyes ;D Igor=kind awesome beatly laser dude ;D

Well, i don't have anything in my PayPal account... Everything i pay with PayPal goes directly from my company's credit card, and i have to account for each and every tiny payment i make.. This is another reason i want to sell some of these lasers, before ordering more stuff. So my accountant doesn't drive me crazy with complaints..

I don't know if you understood me correctly, but i was trying to say, that i would give you my 30 Euro diode, if you pay just enough for me to get another one through a friend from the US, where they are cheaper. I think the drives are $24 or so, and with shipping to me, it would be under $30.

So what i said was, that if my friend from the US is willing to order a Sony NEC Optiarc 7190, rip out the diode and send it to me, i could throw my own 30 Euro open can diode (mounted in an AixiZ module with R/C protection) in with your laser order, or even turn it into a laser by itself, with the free driver i promised. This way you would get an open can for US prices instead of the stupid Slovenian prices. I can't really throw in my one and only 30 Euro ($48) open can for free.. But at least this way, i could arrange for you to get an open can for US prices. I did say i would then turn it into a laser for free tho.

The free driver is definitelly going to help you learn how to make your own lasers. Seeing something in person would make it easier for you to make your own later.

I could also make a kit of sorts, and you would just have to make the final adjustments according to my instructions, and put it together into a powerful burning laser. It's not so hard to make a laser. The real challenge is making them as small as possible.

Of course, an open can at 250mW will require A LOT of heatsinking. During testing, i usually mount it in a vice, and the vice sucks the heat away. I could buy an aluminum enclosure, and the enclosure would be the heatsink, along with some aluminum washers, glued together with thermal epoxy with a high silver content.

I had to go to 400 - 420mA to get 250mW after a clear acrylic lens, and i just realized i don't have any 650nm AR coated lenses. All my AixiZ modules have clear lenses i think. It's a shame, because i measured a big difference in one of my reds yesterday, after putting in the 650nm AR coated Dilda Lazor lens.

P.S. Yesterday when i went to sleep, i waited for my eyes to get accustomed to the dark, and then tried the >76mW prototype Blu Ray. The beam looks AWESOME! Instead of falling asleep, i had to play with it for a while. ;D

Oh, Cybob... The best thing for your red laser would be a 16x Sony diode from SenKat, i think... I don't know how much he sells them for right now, but they can take up to 400mA of current, but driving them at 350mA is better, as it is mostly just heat after that.

It would give you close to 250mW i think. Not as powerful as an open can, but very close, cheaper, and with much less heat dissipation. It's what VillageIdiot is getting, i believe...

That's cool. In that case, you can combine a diode order for lower shipping, and turn them into lazors, with the drivers i am sending.

Maybe you can even convince SenKat to solder some wires and a cap to it....

Of course, i do hope you realize, that this hobby inevitably involves killing some (many) diodes.. I've been very depressed at times because of this, especially when i lost a very good or rare diode.

That's why if i would send you a "kit", Cybob, i would prefer to at least solder the wires to the diode, R/C protection directly across the diode's legs and the wires to the driver.

I will tell you all the do's and don'ts. But some soldering practice doesn't hurt either..

Yeah, okay you can probably send it to my house... Cybob will confirm that I'm not trying to nick off with his diode hehe.

And killing 6x blu-ray diodes must hurt the most >.< I feel sorry for Gooey.

What can i send to your house? I was suggesting you two order 16x diodes from SenKat, as it is probably the cheapest, and you get a discount as forum members. And i was suggesting you order the diodes together to save on shipping (unless it's free?).

But i could also send both lasers and drivers to the same address if that is what you guys want. It could save a bit on shipping. On the other hand, it might be safer to send each separately, so the package is smaller, and less likely to be opened by the customs.

Will do. As soon as i can.

But i really need to work now, or i'll lose a big contract. I'm already stretching the deadline, and not by my fault (they made an order while i was preparing lectures for a big conference, so i couldn't just cancel that)...
