Having more power without pushing the diode would be great!

That is why i would offer the lens to all the people on the list for the same price i would hopefully get it for, just so you can tune your lazors.. Unfortunately, it is not 100% sure they would work in these modules yet. If they do, i will try my best to get them and forward them to you guys. I do not know the exact price yet, so i don't want to say anything wrong, but it is MUCH cheaper, than a thorlabs (which is ~$100).


I am also thinking of adding a jumper inside, to turn them to a higher power, once/if we know it's safe. Not crazy high, but a little. A pot would not be safe, as people like playing with those a bit too much.


I will definitelly keep you all posted. I am very happy with the preliminary results. I discovered that my heatsinking can actually prevent it from dropping in power. The diode only dissipates around 0.4W of heat (compared to 0.7W for a 16x DVD diode at 300mA), so it doesn't actually get hot, only barely noticably luke warm, but it is enough to drop the power 2-3mW. Not with the heatsink tho.


These are going to be great. I expected someone to ask for a higher power, since some of these are being pushed to 105mW, but i think the longevity will make up for the little difference.

This thing can light a cigarette btw! Not as fast as a red at 180mW, but still!

Anyway, guys, i just had to test these babies out. Couldn't help it, even tho i should be working. It was just too interesting.

Now i really need to get back to the real work, and finish it soon, so you can all get your lasers soon as well.

Well, a hundred bucks is a little bit too much for me to pay for a 10mw difference. Let us know if you will get your hands on anything cheaper, tho.

Maybe you misunderstood me.. The ThorLabs lens is $100. The lens i'm talking about should be around 15-25 EURO or so, but i really don't know yet.

It still won't be cheap, but it's better, than ThorLabs.

I rated the powers very conservatively at the beginning, because i knew about the optics decreasing it quite a bit in some cases. That's why i started out with >50mW, later changed to >60mW, as i learned more about it, but after some initial testing i saw they can do ~70mW under the "knee"! That's why 70mW (80mW without optics) is actually a safe power. Thanks god the lens doesn't take away more! I think they can do close to 80mW after optics, while still not over the middle of the "knee". If not with clear lenses, then definitely with the 405nm coated ones.

I will definitely do my best to give everyone the most power possible.

Here is the 70mW Blu Ray side by side with a 150mW red.

In reality, the red is a bit brighter, but the camera obviously prefers the blu. I think the Blu is as bright as a 100mW red. Need to set a red to 100mW and check.

VillageIdiot: Your range would be up to 350mA then, cos from what i heard, it's mostly just heat from then on. Driving it at 300-330mA is probably good. You do have one from the new batch, right? The old ones would die at under 300mA..

Update: I might be able to get up to 80mW out of these, without even changing the current!

There would seem to be small differences between the diodes. I ordered more than needed for the six lasers (backup), so i will be selecting the best 6 of the 9 diodes for you guys. I'm getting more diodes later anyway....


If safely possible, i will give everyone 80mW AFTER THE LENS. Maybe more! I just hope i find enough of the "hotter" diodes among the ones that i ordered. Keep your fingers crossed! Everyone will get a power graph with their laser, so you will know exactly what power you have and how stable it is.



Also, it looks like i might be able to get the diodes through customs unnoticed in the future. In that case, the final price can stay under $200, without giving up on the warranty for currents under 100mA..

I had some incense sticks burning, and there was a cigarette or two involved. One of them was actually lit by the Blu Ray laser!

How come that a blu-ray at about 80mw can light a cig while my 100mw green can't? Has it something to do with the wavelength?

It might have something to do with the wavelength. But a green can not be focused. It has a thick beam in comparison to a beam, that is focused into a tiny spot.

When the entire beam is narrowed down almost to the diameter of a human hair, that is a huge concentration of energy!

But i was surprised myself, that it worked at all. It took a while (a 186mW red can do it in under 10 seconds i think), but it worked!



My >150mW CNI is not very good at lighting a cigarette either, btw... It starts smoking immediatelly, but it takes a while. Reds are the best, because they can also be focused down, but have a lot of power.
