BTW, an interesting thing i noticed while comparing the medium lens to short FLs on reds was, that there is almost none or at most a very minimal difference in power between the two types.. MUCH less difference than on BluRays..

This is because the reds have a much lower NA of the output in the fast axis, so even the "medium custom lens" can bring it "all" out..

So you get a slightly fatter beam of practically the same power that focuses sharper.

Problem is, it's hard to do so many comparisons with only one lens. I can't wait to get my hands on more of them PROPERLY MOUNTED so i can do some real testing!

I'm hoping that perhaps the proper mounting might even reduce the difference on BRs from 7-8% down to around 5-6% ideally, altho i could be wrong (if the light obstructions on the edges only happen when the lens is slightly unscrewed)...

Anyway, Franco should be done with his last series of tests soon (now that i allowed him to remove the lens following special instructions), and i can't wait to see my lenses mounted in Jay's profesionally machined lens nuts! :yh:

The improvised mounting in plastic lens nuts is just sad.. :yabbem:

It looks like someone needs to throw a sandwich into the room for Igor. He is in "manic" mode. The testing will not end until Igor collapses.

KEEP DRINKING FLUIDS, Igor

Ya gotta love that guy, doncha?

Peace,
dave

Luckily i have a Peltier (over)driven mini-fridge filled with drinks in arm's reach even behind my work desk..

But i do sometimes forget to eat... :yabbem:

Didn't know you can throw that far tho.. BTW, i don't eat meat, can you pass me a veggie sandwich please?

Actually if you USPS Express it to me it might get here before the next time i remember i am hungry.. :na:

Hmm, Franco has been very quiet today, not even an email...

He must be busy with all the new tests now that he can take the lens out.. :yh:

Can't wait to see more pics of his! I need to get me some of those papers he is using!
For now my mini peltier fridge was my main target due to the beautiful red fluorescence it produces...

Is that the peltier I sent you in the trade about a year ago? ;D

Lenses are looking very good Igor.

Well, to-day this has been my usual "grand-father day", as my daughter and her husband have restart working, while the children-garden is still closed, so I spent the whole day with my 4 years old grand son..... only this evening I have found the time to read the last news.....ugh, so it looks I have misunderstood the type of lens.... never that now I can understand how a specific P/N is useful.....:undecided:

Ok, so the "Medium Lens" refers to the v1 (or #1 on my old reference table, that now I have updated adding the last Igor description for the three lenses); so, according to Igor experience:

.....If I put the v2 lens into my super-freak 6x, I get almost 280mW on my meter, but when it comes to apparent brightness I don't see a difference from 265mW, I do however see a difference in the beam shape, spot and splatter...

the difference in gain between the v1 and the v2 (similar to 405-G-1) is a little bit higher about what I said to Jay (sorry Jay, it's my fault! :yabbem:), anyway all the pictures are still valid....for a v1/405-G-1 comparison (but on different diodes).

Tomorrow I'll finish the remaining tests, then I'll be able to send the 6x+v1 back to Igor....

Great!

Take your time, Franco, it's no problem if you send it back on Monday... :yh:

That way you have the whole weekend to do the remaining tests....

Ok, hereunder are the two comparison sets. I have still used the glowing paper, and I have shot two pictures for every example: the pictures reporting "Active" have been taken with the laser still beaming, while the pictures reporting "Recorded" have been taken one second after the laser shut-down. The shots of the focused dots have been taken at the usual distance of 10 m, and the pictures have been left dark to give the maximum visibility of the dots.
6x is the Igor super-freak BR laser, while PHR is my BR laser.

I have preferred to split the pictures in two groups, each one relevant to a specific diode. So, immediately herebelow are the pictures relevant to the 6x:

And here are the pictures relevant to the PHR:

I have also done some movies about the IgorT 6x burning characteristics, but it will take some time to assemble and clean them, while the most important thing is that now I'm in condition to send the 6x back to Igor, for the Jay tests.....:yh:

Ok, the job is finally done! (See the previous answer properly upgraded)
It has taken a lot of time, first for the care I have had handling the famous Igor lens , then for several problems that, according to the Murphy's law, always happens when you have something serious to do.... just an example: the Trust 14500 charger end'ed several weeks ago, so I have ordered the Soshine SC-S1 model which (for good luck) arrived in time.... do you think that the "designers" of this charger have foreseen the right space between contacts to allow recharging the "protected" 14500 batteries? NO, obviously! So I had to ream the slot in the plastic case so to prolonge the contact slide track!:banghead:
And during these attempts I lost one battery :undecided:.....oh, well, this is life...

Wow nice work FrancoRob...

It's interesting to see the huge differences between the PHR vs the 6X diode, as well as the lens differences.

I did notice that the last 405-G-1 picture says 6X (in the PHR section), so I figured you might have accidentally put the wrong html link in that one, because I'm sure you most likely have the 405-G-1/PHR/focused dot picture...

But great job there! :gj:

Ooops, Jay, you're right:yabbem:....I'll correct (by inserting the right picture) tomorrow, as here now are the 2 o'clock in the morning, and I hear my pillow calling for me....:yh:

Really interesting comparisons there FrancoRob...

Thanks for doing that!

The focused dots are of particular interest to me. And I see a 'patch' off to one side on both lenses... interesting.

Also, it is interesting how much difference there is between the 6X diode vs the PHR diode.

One thing that I found a little confusing, is that in comparing the focused dots (brightest central area), the 405-G-1 gives a smaller, 'tighter' dot vs the V1 lens on the 6X pictures, but not on the PHR pictures...
