Ok, Batch #3 (or rather the fully decided and paid for part of it): Work is done, i'll write everyone individually with my notes on your laser.

Sam7: I was working on 13 lasers simultaneously, but not all are Batch #3. And not all are done yet (i finished the paid stuff first). But at least the drivers i have to make simultaneously, making them one by one would take forever in comparison...

I'll (ab)use this rare opportunity when most batch members are still reading the thread, to give a couple of "troubleshooting" or rather trouble-preventing tips:

1. First of all, the lens caps i include are there with a purpose. And that purpose is NOT making the lasers look better!
It's preventing the dust from landing on the lens. Now some of you will say that this is self evident, but you would be surprised how many times it happened, that i got a laser back for diode replacement, while all it needed was a new lens.. It came to me without a lens cap too, which doesn't make me happy..

Please try to remember this:
Laser ON = Lens cap OFF!
Laser OFF = Lens cap ON!

It's very simple, make it a habbit of putting the lens cap on every time you turn the laser OFF... I spend a lot of time making sure the optics are clean during packaging, and if you don't use the lens cap, it's all for nothing, and eventually the lens will get ruined to a point, where it could make you think there is something wrong with the laser.

I am so annoyed by dirt in the optics, that for me this is completelly automatic, i never put a laser down without replacing the lens cap first! But if you are new to lasers it may not seem important to you. At least not until it's too late.

2. The body of the laser has to be fully tightened for the electricity to flow through it. This means both the head and the tailcap have to be fully tightened. The electricity doesn't flow through the threads, like in some cheaper hosts, but through the ends of the body.

It doesn't happen often, but sometimes people tell me that the laser won't turn ON unless they fiddle with the tailcap, uncsrew it a little. If this should be happening to you, it means that the tailcap was not fully tightened in the first place (even if you thought it was), and when you unscrew it a little to create a contact, what you do is, you are basically looking for a part of the threads, where the anodisation is damaged, to conduct the electricity.

Well, the threads were never meant to do this. If you have to move the tailcap back and forth to find contact, you're probably not tightening it enough in the first place.

The ONLY other possibility is that the ends of the middle body section are dirty and don't conduct properly. This could theoretically happen, since the threads or o-rings are sometimes lubricated too much, or some particles could come in between (damaged anodisation from the threads, random garbage).

If the ends of the middle body section are clean (shiny aluminum, no anodisation) and the body is fully tightened (head AND tailcap), the body will conduct properly, and you'll have no problems.

Again, this is rare to happen, but when it does it can be annoying to the user. I should probably include it in the instructions and explain with some pictures...

Anyway, i went on some personal business, because it was a holiday yesterday, i'll write all the batch members individually as soon as i can. If not tonight, then over the weekend...

Helooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!

Is it just my wild imagination, or am I missing some important piece of the picture, here ?

Way back, sometime in 2008, I requested "or rather fully decided and paid for" my first blu-ray. After minutes of usage, it broke.
By this time I'd already ordered
"or rather fully decided and paid for"
another one.

Igor,
it had originally been stated, by yourself, to sort my lasers out before the 'evil, cursed batch 2.' Can you imagine how impressed I am as I read,

"i finished the paid stuff first,"

in reference to 'Bitch3 ?'

It gives me absolutely no pleasure, whatsoever, to point any of this information out, especially in public. The last e-mail I received was on the 5th. June, since then I have replied to it and sent several more messages, all without any response. I've always agreed with the philosophical viewpoint, stating "if you've nothing good to say, then that's exactly what should be said, nothing. "

However, facts are facts, even understated ones such as these.

I feel that I have been extremely patient over a period of many months however, where are my lasers " or rather the fully decided and paid for" ones ????

Taking payments for another batch, prior to fulfilling last year's orders ?
Worse yet, I am not the only still waiting for lasers "or rather the fully decided and paid for" items.

On a similar subject, I have sent an e-mail (once again, Incredimail reckons it arrived, as it said for all the others) requesting a bonus laser, as offered to compensate for waiting, so in case it hasn't reached you, I hereby re-request such. That makes a hat-trick of lasers I am now rather tiresome of waiting for.

Please feel free to appraise me of the status of the situation either privately or here. Not by postal service though, I'll probably be headed towards retirement by the time I find anything out !!

I am trying to remain calm and patient. It is, however, taking more and more effort.

Would it be easier to take a drive over and pick them up in person, maybe ?

Perhaps I could ask 'Dony' (Tony Soprano) to call by for them ?

Default Re: FS: >110mW PHR, >140mW 4x & >170mW 6x Blu-Rays

I have to show you guys something i've been working on for the last few days..

I was so excited i completelly lost all sense of time.

I mentioned a while ago, that i would order those 150mW Nichia diodes, because if their specs are correct, they should be as good as 8x's.

So i ordered two test diodes, with USPS Express shipping, hoping to get them in one week. Unfortunatelly they were shipped to me with Priority Flatrate, which sometimes takes up to five weeks!

So i ordered a third, had it shipped to Scopeguy and he shipped it to me with USPS Express, just in case the first two would take too long. (Thanks again, Glenn! It arrived this Monday)

Well, contrary to all expectations the first package arrived in record time - as fast as if it was express. Never received a Priority package from US this quickly.

Unfortunatelly it came at a bad time - beginning of last week, while i was finishing up the lazores.

It caused me tremendous pain, having two potentially awesome diodes on hand, but not being able to test them right away (if it was up to me, i'd drop everything and just test them)..

But then came the weekend, and i spent every free minute on testing and some minor torturing.

First i collected the data for the PIV plots, to compare them to the known graphs of 8x diodes.

Unfortunatelly a PIV graph, while interesting and very informative, doesn't tell the whole story. If these were reds it might, but they are not. They don't have a knee in the graph, and sometimes they don't even have kinks. So it's hard, if not impossible to determine the optimal power from the plots, when it comes to 405nm's.

But that's why i made the Diode Torture Chamber TM a long time ago. Unfortunatelly i was in the middle of upgrading it to a better version, when my life unexpectedly exploded, and the chamber was in little pieces ever since. But letting them cycle with the beams shooting against a photo sensor, and recording their lifetime is the ONLY way of finding out how long they can handle a certain power, how tough they are...

So i finally had the motivation to finish the new Torture Chamber..
I don't know how many more months it would spend in pieces otherwise, there was a lot of work left to do on it. If i knew i would be unable to convert it when i started, i would have left it in the old configuration, which wasn't bad. But now i have Zom-B's timers, which can actually measure the time, the beam is hitting the photo cell. In the previous version i used simple counters with a display, which simply raised the number by one, when the photo cell was hit by the beam. If i knew preciselly how long the ON part of the cycle was, i could then calculate the number of hours, but it was less accurate, than with proper timers, which measure the time the photo cell is exposed to a laser beam.

I just finished the new Torture Chamber at around 6 in the morning.. I was too excited to sleep.

I will now put two of the three Nichia diodes in, side by side, and let them "race" against a good 6x... See which dies first. Hopefully get some usefull lifetime data out of the test. The third i will put into a personal laser and just use it, to see how it performs under heavy use.

But so far so good! I have not yet found any indication that they would be bad. I do however know that 405nm diodes can be deceiving, when it comes to this. So i will also be measuring degradation every day.

Anyway, i need to pretty up the PIV plots, and edit the photos, then i'll post a new thread on the testing of these pretties..

I'll post a link here, when i'm done posting the collected data.

Otherwise, i only just now realized what day it is!
When i get too excited, these things can suck me in completelly.
Having to wait almost a week before i could start the testing only made me more excited when i finally had the time.

The sooner i start the "race", the sooner i will know the results. Problem is, i don't want them to die too soon, so hopefuly i won't know the results too soon...

Anyway, i'll check my email as soon as this thing is up and running and the testing thread posted!

If these diodes are as good as i hope, then they will provide even more power with the same life, or the same power with an even longer life!

I am almost scared of predicting too much from fear that i would jinx them... They need to run at least 100 hours, before i will feel 100% good about them.

Man, i really missed this part. Doing experiments and all.

I mean, only making lasers for others all the time can get boring, that's why i keep trying to make them better and better, to keep it a challenge.

But the part i always liked the most were the various experiments, scientific tests, to determine what diodes can or can not do.

If these diodes wouldn't represent a fascinating opportunity, i would probably not spent time rebuilding my "Torture Chamber" just yet, even tho i wanted to race some 6x's for a long time. But with 6x's i have a feeling i already know them and their limits. These here are completelly unknown so far. And that's what is so interesting for me.
