Cool FS: 1000 Lumen Vintage Eveready XM-L U3 Mod!

I have a few of these vintage hosts, and will be offering this modification here...

These lights are from the 30's. (and some even from the 20's) They have normal wear on them, and show their age. But that's part of how great they are! (IMO)

These are going fast, but I'll be picking up more as I find them...

I'm using the same 3 Amp driver and similar build style shown for my vintage Ray-O-Vac mod. (details of that build shown here)

* I'm using and XM-L U3 emitter binned 1C... (or let me know what emitter you would like)
* I also have the new XML-2 emitters by request...
* The driver is 8 X AMC7135 chips, but the new V2 driver uses 380mA chips vs 350mA chips normally.

So it puts out 3 Amps...

I personally like the 2 mode configuration with memory. (high, medium) But I can configure the driver how ever you would like it per this configuration sheet:

Details of the build are shown in the pictures and captions below:

The build involves gluing an aluminum plug and battery contact board to convert the light to a single cell design.

Then on top of that plug, I use a spring, in order to press my heatsink/emitter/driver module up into a custom sized reflector. So that everything is pressed solid up against the bezel and lens.

It's a very nice build, but requires some time and effort. (I like to get them perfect) The light is modified to use a single 32650 Li-Ion cell. I have 6000mAh 32650 Li-Ion cells on hand.

* This is a fixed focus build - Best spot...

The picture above shows one with a beveled front glass lens. So far I have only found two of these lights that have the bevel.

Most have a flat glass lens...

At the moment, I have these available: (you can message me for pics/updated availability)

Aluminum Reflector: (choose smooth or MOP)

I wish I could find the right size reflector, but have tried, and cannot. So I have to machine the aluminum reflector to fit. And that means extra work. It also means that there may end up being very slight imperfections sometimes if any machined material gets in there while the lathe spindle is turning during the machine work. (not an issue unless you are very very picky)

Smooth reflector...

MOP reflector...

The beam is excellent...

Current readings (2 mode configuration): (High, medium)

Pretty much the same at the emitter as measured at the tail: (linear driver)

Measured at the tail: (battery current draw from a single, 6000mAh 32650 Li-Ion)
* High - 3020mA's... Estimated run time - 2 hours!
* Medium - 890mA's... Estimated run time - Over 6 hours at about 320 lumens!

Pricing:

My price for one of these Vintage mods including the battery and charger, is like so: (you can just subtract from the total if there is something listed that you do not need)

* Complete Vintage Eveready build (let me know reflector choice - smooth or MOP) - $199 (I can show you pictures of the different hosts currently available)
* 6000mAh 32650 Li-Ion cell - $24
* WF-188 charger - $29
* Shipping - (based on shipping location and depending on how paid, etc...) PM for total...

Hope you like it!

I'll be using this post for quoting feedback from buyers...

I Love to see good feedback. Here's the start of some buyer feedback on this build. So that I can link to it from other sites...

I had many questions and requests to which Jayrob was very professional and easy to work with. He shipped it out Wednesday afternoon (3-25) from California and it was in my cold Wisconsin hands before lunch that Friday (3-27). 10/10 in every aspect for this amazing light and its' builder! I'll upload some pics when I can get to my desktop, not sure how/if I can from the mobile site.
Very pleased, thanks again Jayrob

I have a Cyclops 30 million candlepower spotlight (incandescent, with a big battery), and this equals that monster. The brass Eveready is the same, with incredible throw. I really love these lights - taking nothing away from the Maglight builds, but these are real sleepers, and look awesome in their vintage splendor. It's so nice to have the security of lighting up a dark alley like it was daytime. I shudder to think of what these single-emitter fire-breathers will bring in the future: 10,000 lumens? Pulling one amp? Runtime: 100 hours? Lol! The future is BRIGHT!
Thanks Jay, for these super builds. GO VINTAGE!

Default Re: FS: 1000 Lumen Vintage Eveready XM-L U3 Mod!

Nobody asked how much one of these would cost if he machined a larger heat sink for the head to make a laser out of it? I guess that I could, seeing as these vintage hosts seem to be very popular for the community.

How much would it cost to get a kit something like this (if you're interested in making this available):
Vintage Host (with modifications for Li-Ion battery)
Custom aluminum pill drilled out to fit the 17mm round drivers (maybe larger pending buyer request?)
Custom heatsink for the standard 12mm modules w/ setscrew
OR
Custom heatsink for pressfitting various diodes? (3.8mm, 5.6mm, 9mm)

That looks like it'd be a sizable chunk of aluminum, AND difficult to machine, but I figured I might as well ask here and send those looking for new and interesting builds over here if you are interested in making these available for laser-building purposes .

Default Re: FS: 1000 Lumen Vintage Eveready XM-L U3 Mod!

It can be done yes, but it's a little tricky is all... (I've done a couple similar builds for others)

The reason I say tricky, is because the host is constant 'hot' from the battery.

So that means you need to isolate your driver and/or also the module.

If the diode has neutral pins, then you don't have to worry about that, but you will still have to isolate your driver only to the switch. (not the host)

Yes I have ways for accomplishing this.

It's just a custom build all the way, and it will depend on what the module is??

If it's for a DPSS module or what ever the case may be.

Hey have you seen the new options for my D Mag kit?:

Wow! Thanks for the fast reply. I can really appreciate good business practice . I was mainly, asking as I stated above, in case I needed to send someone over here if they wanted vintage hosts, so I'm glad to hear I can send people your way if they want one.

YOU AND YOUR ADVERTISING. I'm certainly looking at the "stubby" or the "saik". I;ve got two builds lined up atm, but when those are finished I'm going to start saving up for one of those. I've yet to build a nice sizable hand-held with some good power. Until then, you'll have to make do with this +1 .... when I can give you more again >.>

What do you like about yours? Mine... I just love the idea of a vintage flashlight being brought up to date. and when I need a thrower, I grab the Jayrob Vintage. it's my only thrower. I do wish it was more weatherproof because I'd love to take it on canoe trips. But I just don't want to risk it and instead use the TK35. but the Jayrob Vintage would be so much better on a trip. I think its a great flashlight for the price and you get a true vintage host to boot. very cool, useful and effective.

That's too cool to see your work on the big screen.
Now you have your foot in the door.

Nah, no fame...

It's just pretty cool is all.

I wish there would be an out take at the end of the movie of maybe Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller saying something like 'man where did you get these awesome flashlights?' 'I'm keeping this one'...

Now that would be cool!

Yeah that would be cool to see or even get some feedback on reaction of some of the cast...

Because you know for sure there will be some good reaction.

Especially with a brass bodied 1930's Eveready putting out 1000 lumens...
