Yea was not saying anything about your meter just wanted to know what lens you were using to see how efficient your diodes is. So that is the three element lens and looks like the diode is nice and efficient. The test I linked to was done with a G-2 and was worried your diode may be less than efficient if you were using a G-2 but looks like you are all good.:beer:

Hey there thanks again for the led its amazing now if i got the blue and green where can a get a descent heatsink for it? those run about 45 Piece!

An old CPU sink or similar you can find would work or you could double up on one heatsink like done here.

Jordan --- I mounted up one of my V5 drivers to that 120 mW diode I recently
got from you. I set it at 250 mA and with the 3 element lens I got with the module,
I'm getting ~150 mW on two meters. I think this is a conservative setting but I can
always jack it a bit but I think I'm about at the knee of the curve. I will look for other
lenses to try.

OH -- It does pop a balloon !!!!!!

I charged the cell and now am reading ~160 mW. The color when shown beside an old
red laser does have more orange in the spot.

Just got my 520, opnext 638 and 9mm 445 :) Took a while since the cargo had to wait for other stuff. Thanks Jordan! :beer:

New 9mm module. Back end is short and has direct contact on the back part for better heatsinking. Haven't seen a module like it :beer:

I compared the 520 and 638 vs the 532 and 650 ePay pens that I have. The 638 vs 650 difference is very slight to me even side by side but the 520 vs 532 is pretty noticeable side by side.

Sorry, no tests with the 9mm yet. Don't have a heatsink that can take the heat. Save it for next time.

One thing I'd like to point out though. I asked my friend to order the bare 9mm diode with lens holder for me, not sure who made a mistake on the order (can't remember how much I paid for everything) and I ended up with the 9mm pressed into a module. It's still good though :)


edit: So, I was going to remove the stock lens from the holder. Followed the instructions posted here and after soaking for more than a few hours, twisted the lens holder and the lens shattered. Oh well, time to order another G2.

370mA seems a little high for the opnext. 300mA seems to be the norm IIRC.

I'm now reading 180 mW like you show in your tests.

I wanted to use the AMC7135 for convenience and also read a lot about how much current it can take and seeing what DTR did in his test, I decided 350mA should be no problem. Then the first 7135 I picked did 370mA lol. :)

All diodes are a little different. You need to do what many of us have done for years --
Graph the Po vs mA and look for the "knee" where efficiency drops off fast. CAUTION - there's a grave stone up ahead !!!!! I try to keep mine close to where the curve starts to level.
The good news, a diode can be buried in the back yard using only a 1/2" drill bit !!!!!!!

OK, took your advice and did a simple measurement. Driver was still attached and I just lowered the current limit on the bench supply so the max I could measure is right up to the linear driver's set limit.

Seems I'm just about at the knee so 370mA should be just fine.

I also can't wait to play with the 520 so I made a temporary holder before I get a host made :)

Still can't decide if I'd use the G2 lens so that I get the full 115mW but it has the dreaded wings or the 3 element glass which puts out 100mW but doesn't have the wings on the dot.

I also did a quick test on the 9mm to know if I got a freak diode. 2.3A on the bench supply with the module in my hand so I know when to turn it off once it gets too hot. Got about 2.99W with the G2 lens. Means I got an average one but not too bad.

Not much power increase so I'd stick with the 3 element, IMO.

Edit: Whoops. Starting to derail the thread. Sorry. :D
