LPM arrived today; well-packed, and in great working order! Just as expected, and even better!


3 freebie <5mW ~650nm's tested in a 3-5mW each

1 "Super Beast #006" <5mW tested at 40mW (great deal at $19!) - a little disappointing, but I think it is my battery that needs charging

I cannot wait till the "Super Beast #100" arrives to test !

I did want to ask, what should the +/- voltage to the Thermopile be, coming from the meters power supply?

Me too, (always around -2mA) even when I first turn it on, and also after some tests of low power (40mW) lasers.
It does go back to -0mA after several seconds to maybe one minute, is this normal operation?

Hey nospin -- what is the duty cycle and optimal distance for the thermopile?

If I measure a <200mW greenie from ~2" away, wil lthat hurt the sensor?

Do I need to wait a min or two between readings?

I noticed after a test that it lingered around 1-3 mW for a while ...

A 2mm beam diameter dead center on the disc is how it was calibrated
so any greenie will be about the same as that.

there is no duty cycle with the sensor

It is very sensitive to outside energy sources, lights, air currents, you, anything
you can see that when you hold your hand in front of it.

If the disc is heated by energy it will take a few seconds to equalize.

Nospin, and all -

If you wrap the sensor in a can-koozie (yeah, those "beer" can cooler thingies !) made from silicon/squishy whatever it is -

You will have an EXCELLENT insulator, and the sensor will not be as sensitive to outside interference. Coherent actually ships a Koozie with their top-of-the-line meter/sensor systems, and when I unpacked mine, I was like, "Wow...Iam TOTALLY underwhelmed ! Spend almost two grand with this company, and they send me a beer koozie..." Until I realized how stupid I was (hahahahaha !) and saw the instructions for trimming it down to insulate/protect the sensor.

You should give this a try - anyone and everyone who has one of nospins' AWESOME meters, or any other true thermalpile system (NOT the TEC units - puh-leeze ! Although it will work with those, too I imagine...just distinguishing between the fabled "thermalpile TEC units" <---hahahaha and the TRUE Thermalpile units) should give this a shot, as it works FABULOUSLY !

yes, the meter is very nice indeed.

Now it's time to get some 5 watt diodes to test it's maximum rating. :)

I hope I'm not out of line here to post a link to one of my threads (poll)
asking for input of the members as to what diode they wish they could afford.

I needed to have it noticed quickly so I can reply to the manufactures quotes
before the time runs out on them, and pricing changes.

I'm planning on a very large purchase at wholesale pricing, and sharing that savings
with all the members here, and later becoming a distributor for the manufacturer with the best pricing.

PLEASE take a look at the poll and vote for the diode you wish you could buy at a reasonable price.

Even though it's not on the list of choices, one manufacturer is now offering,
635nm 1 watt in both TO3 and C-mount cases
so if this is one you wish you can buy, just mention it in a separate post at the poll's thread and I'll add it to the totals when the votes are added.
