It seems that the module was not set firmly enough or the set screw was loose which would explain why the laser could not be focused properly. It would also explain the poor connection at the solder joints which were apparently not protected with heat shrink or even electrical tape.

Assuming the diode and driver were not damaged from the short circuit, it should be as simple to fix as re-soldering the wires to their proper pins, wrapping them in electrical tape or heat-shrink, and then re-setting the module (properly).

I can still try this man, but I don't want to make it look like I have broken it more or something. If I do anything to it ben will claim that I am at fault.

Like I said, if he just sends it back to me I will see if its a simple fix. But he refuses to do so.

Turning the focus ring may have broken the solder joints resulting in what we see in the pictures.

Assuming the diode and driver were not damaged from the short circuit, it should be as simple to fix as re-soldering the wires to their proper pins, wrapping them in electrical tape or heat-shrink, and then re-setting the module (properly).

I'd like to make a few comments on your posts from your posts in this thread.

You don't know much about laser drivers or diodes do you? If a wire was loose and intermittently contacting the pins on the diode something would be burnt up. Good laser diode drivers have output capacitors, when the diode is unhooked from the driver while power is still applied the capacitor will charge to a very high voltage. Once that diode is connected again it will get a lot more voltage than it is supposed to get and it will LED.

Also, if it is a boost or buck driver running it without a load (no diode connected) will most likely kill the driver. In the event that it somehow doesn't the output capacitor will still discharge into the diode killing it anyway.

You need to calm down and read, get to know how lasers work before offering to fix things you know nothing about for other people.

I would strongly advise you do not send your laser to this member. He is fairly new and doesn't seem to know his stuff too well.

You have proven yourself untrustworthy to me and I dont trust your workmanship to fix this laser. Also you make no guarantees it will be fixed. You also want me to pay for parts to repair it.
If you can't fix it once I send it to you will you refund everything?

Do you have any experience with a soldering iron?
If not, assuming your father can do it for you, it is as simple as connecting the correct wire to the correct pin(s). That info you should be able to get from bhwollen.
If not, the diode's polarity relative to the pin configuration is available in many DIY tutorials and guides all over the forum.

The worst case scenario is that a short circuit damaged the diode and/or driver but the only way to tell would be to test them independently.

i have built many a laser.
I as a seller not the one problem i had once, only once.
He said when he twisted the focusing lens the whole modules turned.
That is what broke the wire off.
that happened to me. and it is why i use a silicon heat sink compound now.
When it hardens it acts like a decent glue also put locktight in the threads.
The locktight is a must.
This sounds more to be a problem of rough shipping plus not enough precautions.
The diode should be fine. the driver should be fine your dad may not know 100% what hes talking about some drivers look like shorts due to the way we use chip and circuits but they work.
Your best option is a middle man service if you dont trust your seller.
i doubt the diode is dead and i doubt the driver is bad. but for future build remember silicon compound and locktight.
I had one unit do this to me and the same thing happened another was the battery termin spun the wires off when he turned the head of the laser when putting the head back on. again any component that is in there should be held down with a light adhesive or locktight.
this helps prevent shock damage and will give you a longer lasting product.

I personally only have experience in automotive with much larger devices and easier to get to wires.
My dad said that he would like me to send it back for a refund or something instead of him trying to solder it. Also mentioned here is the great chance that the diode is burnt.
He said "you shouldn't settle for such crap and just sit idly by".

I have experience with lasers and drivers pontiac sure not like you but i know ! If you think that the only think i will do is to solder the driver lead to the diode pin then you are wrong ! First i will test it with my test load to see if the driver works if yes then i will connect one of my flexdrives to the diode to check the diode works and if yes then i will connect the driver to the diode !

Dont you think that i know ?

Did you do something about this when it happened to you ie. pay for it to be fixed or something or offer for a full refund on receipt of the laser?

The other issue is the way this laser is set up makes it impossible for the diode to come out of whatever part it is in making the soldering job very difficult to do in such a tight space.

I live in Canada, and have had a couple other American member offer to take a look.
If I need to have you look at it though i will let you know.
I like all of these other members who are trying to help, this is a great forum and I just wish I had bought from them instead.
