Re: VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with 'bhwollen'

This excludes your from paying half for sure...

I have some credit at flaminpyro's shop of wonders. I would like to kick in $10 bucks for any work you may need to have done. Hopefully it's just a quick solder job Then you will only be out labor and shipping minus my $10..

Quite generous of you....
Too bad I "have to spread it around" some more...;)

Re: VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with 'bhwollen'

Thanks to all of you who have helped, offered to help, or guided me so far. This is a great community, I guess I just chose a bad apple the first time.

I should have two very nice working lasers pretty soon with the one I recently purchased from dave and this one will be fixed and sent back in the next couple weeks.

Don't try to call someone a scammer just because you had a bad experience with him.. It happens. I hope you like your new lasers. The repair will be done professionally. Good luck

Didn't and wouldn't use them word 'scammer'. I did receive A laser. It seems like it would have been as described if it had ever really worked. I guess the 1.8w output has been brought into question and we never saw LPM shots, so it may or may not truly be 1.8W as advertised. I am not disputing that though, I will take bens word for it if or until I find out otherwise.

SO I wouldn't say scammer, I would just say poor businessman and possibly poor craftsman (if it is found to be so).

Re: VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with 'bhwollen'

We should wait till someone experienced sees the laser before the "scammer" tag is tossed about.

If he used a 1.2A flashlight driver and a regular aixiz glass lens I would label him a scammer. Bending the truth in your favor is scamming IMO.

Re: VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with 'bhwollen'

I just realized that I think the problem he had even bigger than no heatshrink was nowhere to screw in the actual diode. The lense would be screwed into both the focus knob and the actual diode. The diode, though, was only held in by the wires and was not screwed in or attached anywhere.
I know I have said something similar, but I though before that there was an attempt made and the threads were stripped or something, but I guess there actually wasn't. There was just a screw in sideways in the opening in the heatsink to prevent the diode from falling too deep inside, but nothing to prevent it falling out. This is why when I tried to change the focus it got all twisted.

Re: VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with 'bhwollen'

The diode is the brass piece pressed into the back of that thing you keep calling a diode. The preferred term for the thing that holds the lens is an Aixiz module. (sort of like the things in my signature, except silver instead of copper.) There should be a set screw in the heatsink to keep the module from rotating and falling out. If that screw was loose it would rip the wires off of the diode eventually.

Re: VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with 'bhwollen'

From all of this thread it sounds like
1. The aixiz module was NOT secured in the heatsink with the set screw
2. The head/ heatsink was not assembled properly by not twisting the wires, and breaking the diode pin/driver connection
3. NO HEATSHRINK? Come on, you can't expect the laser to last too long without something keeping the connections isolated

I need to disagree with you on that one...

If you buy a Product that arrives defective and the Seller
states he has already spent your payment and for that
reason you (the buyer) will need to Pay for all shipping...
Parts and repairs...
Then that.... I call a non experienced irresponsible scamming
seller.

That is not the way to take care of a customer that chose
you and your product..

Comment 1:
I hate this thread. But I want to address a problem that I see made over and over and over again in sales threads for un-LPM'd lasers. In fact, I see this error made all over this site, and by novice and experienced laser-ers alike.

That problem? Reliance on a 1 mA to 1 mW efficiency for 445s.

"Really Novice" users make this error by simply mistaking one unit for the other.
Even "Experienced" users often make this error because of this persistent illusion that the expected ratio is 1 to 1.

If you're using standard Aixiz glass lenses, you cannot expect a 1 to 1 ratio between current and ultimate output wattage. You might get really lucky with an efficient diode, but in my opinion the odds are so far against a 1 to 1 ratio with standard Aixiz glass, that it is downright irresponsible to suggest this to be expected. It's much more likely that at 1.5 A you'll see 1.2 Watts of output, than that you'll see 1.5. As far as I'm concerned, we need to stop pretending that 1A in should get you 1W out with standard Aixiz glass. It's just not the norm.

Comment 2:
As to why Ben would sell an un-LPM'd laser, that's beyond me. I'm not sure of the chronology here, but I do remember him mentioning at one stage that he had sent his LPM back to LaserBee, and had to pay them $50, to "re-coat" the sensor. That's just something he told me, so I don't know whether it interacted chronologically with this issue, and/or whether that was the full story etc. But if that is the case, then it may be the reason Ben didn't have his LPM when this listing was made. I have no idea.

Do we know what driver is in there? Is it a jib or dual microflex?

BH said something about it being a Jib 1.8 on page two.

I would be more interested to know the lens.

If it is an Aixiz glass lens, I would challenge anyone to show me a 445 running at 1.8A that can do 1.8W with an Aixiz glass.

haha, i'm glad you are seeing this now too. as to comment 1. I made a thread about me being aggrivated by everybody calliing the 445's 1 watt. LoL. most thought i was being sensitive. now it is a pretty normal thing to address the 445 as a 2 watt FTW!!!!

as to comment 2, be claims he has 2 or 3 LPM's so him not testing this laser is inexcusable.

Re: VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with 'bhwollen'

If this was this laser that the OP bought heres a sales thread quote,

Asking $350 (Drop to $300) Shipped in U.S.

Laser has not been tested on an LPM but it is running at 1.8A with a 405-g-1 lens. Should exceed 2W.

Comes with custom focus adapter as pictured.

405-g-2 lens included

Tripod included.

Uses one 32600 battery (included)

Comes with 1 UltraFire WF-188 Rapid Charger

Options:
You can get a discount if you would not like some of the accessories
Subtract $30 if you would like the standard aixiz glass lens instead of the 405-g-2
Subtract $10 if you would not like the charger
Subtract $5 if you would not like the tripod

Same, I beileve when the thread was first posted he was trying to acquire an Alpha but couldn't get one. It should have been updated when an LPM was acquired to confirm his specs.

We're probably going to have to wait unitl Jeff takes a look at it. Unless the OP does a lot of quick research he may not be able to tell us what we need to know with Lense types and the tech specs that we know off the tops of our heads ;)

michael.

Well, many "new buyers" of lasers are idiots to some extent. Here's an example:

I used to sell my Mosquito modules on eBay as "1.5W" (they run the diodes @ 1.66A). When advertised as 1.5W, I was selling about one a day. Now I'm describing them as "1.66A" and not making a wattage claim and I'm selling about 1 a week.

New buyers are often idiots. They think 1.8W is infinitely superior to 1.6W. I guess they want the higher wattage rating as some sort of immature status symbol Whom they are impressing with such a figure is beyond me (my friends would just laugh and say "so, like 1/30th the power of light bulb?").

It doesn't matter that a 1.8W laser costs no more in parts than a 1.6W laser - if you don't have that higher figure, it's much harder to sell. That said, it doesn't make it ok to perpetuate the belief in a power rating that you know your laser is unlikely to attain. You've gotta suck it up, describe your items honestly, and take the lower selling price - even though left right and center, others will be mis-representing their stuff, and selling to your potential buyers. At least, that's what you've "gotta do" if you want to sleep soundly at night (and not have threads like this popping up).

At the end of the day, if the people who claim this to be a hobby and not a business they are trying to profit from, really meant it, we'd be doing a lot better around here.

As to your reply to comment 2 - I agree. If he had LPMs, and didn't LPM this, then there's really no positive conclusion you can draw other than that this plainly wouldn't have hit 1.8W, and perhaps BH suspected that. Honestly, I've put together a bucket load of 1.76 A drivers, even before the Mosquito modules I'm selling now, and they just plainly DO NOT have a 1A to 1W equivalence with standard Aixiz glass.
