International shipping hassles

Well I sold off many of my personal laser recently. 2 of those went to the UK. The buyer paid $10 shipping which is enough for priority mail. Priority international does not have international tracking numbers. The package was mailed on the 26th of Sept. It is now the 26th of Oct. The buyer still has not received the lasers. I do not normally do this but because I did not state my policy in the sale thread I have refunded the buyer. I normally only guarantee delivery if the buyer pays for express mail as this is the only way I can track the package and determine whether the package actually did get delivered or not. Moral of the story. If you are shipping internationally to someone on the forum, make them pay for express mail. If they do not wish to, explicitly state that the risk they are taking is their own and not yours. Otherwise you may end up eating $200 Like I just have.

Re: Good sale gone bad

I am the buyer in question.

Taken from my/our PM's

I paid an extra $10 above the agreed shipping cost to have it sent express/ recorded.

I dont mind the topic being made, we've both lost out, i wanted the lasers, Luke wanted the money, and i sent an extra $10 (without being asked) for express/ recorded shipping.

But ive had many dealings with many people on this forum, all have gone flawlessly, except this one.

Re: Good sale gone bad

I left your name out of this because you did nothing wrong. This was a warning to sellers of my mistake. The $10 extra you sent was only enough to cover priority shipping and I should have requested additional payment for express mail seeing as how you expressed interest in that shipping method. Express mail is more expensive.

I too have had hundreds of transactions on this forum some with flaws some without but everyone has received what I have sent them. Except you.

Re: Good sale gone bad

I understand.

I have no idea how much recorded/signed for delivery costs from the US, but it costs from between £2- £4.50 in the uk for a light parcel, so I took a guess.

You say the extra $10 i sent was only enough to cover priority shipping, is that with the allready agreed $10 shipping? which equals $20 , was that not enough to make it some kind of tracked post?

EDIT

@T_J,

The laser i bought from phoenix77 got grabbed by customs, and i was notified within 24hrs, ive had no such notification this time.

Re: Good sale gone bad

We ship anything over $100.00 with tracking and insurance
to anyone... not only Forum members.
If you can't prove a package arrived at your customer's
door... you may end up biting the bullet... as you did..

The burden of shipping lies with the seller... if the buyer
finds your Tracked and Insured shipping costs are too
high then the customer should buy elsewhere...

Like T_J said... Customs or just lost come to mind...

Even an express mail envelope to the UK is ~$30 USD, if the package is more than a pound in weight, then the price goes up.
Had it been sent express mail, it could still get lost just like thre priority package did and you would be in the same boat unless you added insurance, which if it was insured for $200 or even $100, that amount would be have to be the entered into the customs value too and that would mean the buyer would be paying duties and taxes on the $200 when it arrived.

I think you hsould have given it a little more time, I've had alot of international priority mail packages take 4 weeks to arrive, one even took almost 7 weeks.
Chances are it will still arrive.

Yes, priority to the UK was $15. Express to the UK was $30. But this is neither here nor there. I have not placed blame on you, I have refunded you, and I have accepted the fault of the lost package As my own. Why are you even posting in my thread? There's nothing you need to prove. Nobody is accusing you of anything yet you've already built up a defense. And in all likely hood your package will still arrive. It is probably just taking a while. If/when it does I hope you will do the honorable thing and re-submit payment. Sorry for the trouble Ped. I know you are a good member of the forum and I had no intention of discussing this on the open forum. The PM's were fine with me. This thread was intended for others to learn from my mistakes.

Re: Good sale gone bad

First Class Package (based on 2 pounds) = $17.64

Priority Mail Small Flat Rate box = $13.45

Express Mail Flat Rate Envelope = $28.95

I also charge $15 and $30 to cover packaging and handling

Even with tracking, most people in the UK (and some other countries) do not want it insured for the correct amount anyway. With a VAT of 17.5% (going up to 20% soon) most request that the value be reported as under $20 anyway. You lose either way.

About the only real thing that express does for you from the US is to give you **some idea** of where it disappeared.

Peace,
dave

Not true, you also shipped my HLPM II (price was $62.99) with insurance shipping. The bad point is that the customer has to pay high custom taxes :eg:

Thats because they are busy playing with your stuff

International shipping, especially overseas can take more than a month.

If a customer is not willing to pay the 60$ for fedex (in my case) I ask that they wait
at least 44 days from purchase which leaves the option to chargeback in their hands,
and as much possible time to land.

I have sent to the US with 10day expedited and items still took 3-4weeks.

I wouldnt say the package is lost yet, possibly a chain of lazy postal
and customs folk along the way..

Re: Good sale gone bad

I too have waited for what seemed an eternity for things to turn up from the US and more than four weeks at times. The usual culprits are the packages from the extreme west, so there is still hope... (I don't know if mail from there goes out via Hawaii and takes a western-bound approach to Europe? :tinfoil: )

Italy? Well, it's less than a third the distance to the US but often takes 3 times as long to deliver there from the UK! I sympathise with you HIMNL9! The good thing is it doesn't take nearly as long for things to get out of Italy... :D

Re: Good sale gone bad

I see no reason to accuse anybody of anything.

This tread is simply a useful reminder to agree beforehand on shipping and who will take what risk.

In my case there is a 25% vat on anything over 80Kr ($14-15) plus a 160Kr customs fee for processing it. It can get quite expensive. :(
