I've been looking for a 589 now for some time and considered it the final building block that I wanted in a collection after acquiring 473. I advertised in the BST section and quite soon got a PM from Gismo (Mike) here who is reducing his collection, and offered to sell me his DragonLasers Spartan 589.

He offered me a fair price for his hardly used Spartan and the deal was done. The parcel arrived in 3 days, which is typical of post I get from Ireland - it can be quicker than receiving parcels from England!

Inside is the promised Spartan, and some gifts very kindly enclosed. A small camera tripod, a little stainless steel green laser pointer (!), and a diffraction grating, which I am over the moon about as it will greatly enhance what I can do when I get the camera out.

The yellow laser blew me away when I turned it on. In fact I think I probably swore a few times it was that good! Visible beam in a daylit room if you bring it up to your face (looking "down" the beam, I don't mean shining it in my eye!), instant on almost like a diode laser (it actually starts quicker than my laserbtb green) and is visibly very stable - mode changes and output fluctuations are only just noticeable if it is set very still against a bright background. It exceeded all my expectations, I genuinely didn't think it would be anywhere near this bright. The host is bigger and heavier than I expected, I actually wondered if there was a battery inside when I unpacked it.

All in all super pleased with everything and like the first time I dealt with Mike this was just as pleasant, so thank you. The extra gifts were also appreciated.:drool:

Man that is one beautiful laser, your a lucky guy trench! Do you know what's it's outputting? Some DL 589's went almost to 100mW IIRC.

You should also take some more beam shots :) +rep

I'm glad to see a happy camper there! Congrats on becoming the 589nm club member, I'm sure the golden dragon's ended up in good hands:). Make sure to give it some justice in comparison camera test to other wavelengths you own in a film style you do, Callum!

Cheers:beer:

I think it's just shy of 100mW from what I remember when Mike reviewed it. All I know is it competes with my laserbtb "100mW" green, the green is naturally going to be more visible but the beam on the yellow is narrower, so it seems about right. I still didn't expect the yellow to be as brilliant or anywhere near as stable though. DL really landed on their feet with these, it's a phenomenal unit.

I have not got my camera at the moment but whenever I get it back I will be adding more beamshots to my DPSS paradise set! As much as I love my GLP-594 it will be nice finally having a yellow that I don't have to prime for 5 minutes just to get a beamshot of!!

Thanks, Ped

Couldn't have asked from a nicer guy to buy it from actually, Mike is a pleasure to deal with.

Your rep power currently says "561", wonder if it's trying to tell me something :thinking:

I honestly don't know as I like them both. I can see a subtle difference in the colour but the GLP/Rigel being less bright probably exacerbates that. One can't ignore that 594 is the original DPSS yellow and the comical problems mine has just lasing at all on some days makes me appreciate it even more.

If I absolutely had to pick one I'd just say 589, because it's the sodium D line ie the colour of SOX.
