I want to publicly thank Ben for selling me a very unique laser. My research has all but confirmed that it's one of the lab prototypes built by Raytheon in the last quarter of 1960 or the first quarter of '61 (possibly one of only six) for the very first commercial laser ever produced for sale. It's a ruby laser head that's missing its cover and so there's no label information attached to it.
The first pic shows the head without its cover. The second pic is from "Masers and Lasers" by H. Arthur Klein (1963), showing the laser with part of the cavity reflector cut away. This one has a conical rod holder and mine is cylindrical. I also have internal Raytheon documentation describing this as the "laboratory prototype of elliptical optical maser". The third pic is from "The Story of the Laser" by John M. Carroll (1964), and shows the full head in the arm of Clarence Luck from Raytheon.
Ben told me he found it on ebay as a "buy it now" for next to nothing, and he snatched it right up thinking it might be one similar to another I have. He brought it over to my house a week ago and it's taken this long to hear from my contacts at Raytheon.
I could hardly hold my enthusiasm, and I'm certain he saw it. He could've reamed me and he didn't. This is one stand-up man, despite some rocky deals that might have been reported here and occasional rough patches of communication. Real life gets in the way of all our hobby activities, especially on the internet where we expect instant gratification. Let's cut each other some slack.
So here's to Laser_Ben!:beer::beer::beer:
