I got my 445nm diode burned out, when I touched it (ESD), as seen on other thread. I wrote my whole history to DTR and he said that he had a uncanned (short open can) 445nm LD that loose the can during projector manufacturing. $20 + $13 was his price, for a open can diode with priority shipping. After selling some lenses and things here in LPF and real life, I got the money and payed it. It was shipped 11 december, 2010 and reached my house today.
I opened the typical USPS priority mail and what I've found??
ANOTHER ENVELOPE! lol :D
I opened the yellow envelope and what I've found??
A 445nm diode in a sealed static baggie. I've seen the envelope was still 'full', so I looked further and what I've found?
Another diode ;) one fully uncanned and other half uncanned.
both perform equally, just are more suscetible to contaminations in the gain medium semiconductor.
DTR is a very good seller and gave me this chrismas gift :)

actual emitter pictures (from DTR):

this is the full decanned.
the half decanned wasn't photographed yet :)

(Both diodes are on they own heads, fully working now)

Err, an open can 445? Sorry but the way you stated it seems like its a 445. Is this for real?

These open can 445's have better beam specs and dot in comparison to the close can 445's ? I ask because on that post there is a foto of the open can without lens and there are no trash on the big blue bar on the wall..

yes they will perform better (not in physical dot appeareance - it is still a rectangle) but there isn't an additional lens to get dust, so there will be less 'trash' on the dot itself, as you said. ;)

...as long no one allows the die to get contaminated

I want to say they pass more power but I was not able to test them before decaning them so I have no data to back it up. I did not feel like decanning one for just testing purposes. But the raw output on a decanned 445 is beautiful. At one point there was some speculation that the diode window on the 445 gets burnt and is one of the reasons for some of the artifacts that are attributed to the Aixiz and G-1 lenses but when I tested the lenses with the decanned diode and a normal one they both had the same artifacts.
