Okay so i know Cyparagon is a respected member and i used to look up to him, but he unreasonably negetive repped me... I recently made an account on WL forums. On December 9th to be exact. I saw a post about someone wanting to pot mod their WL core. I purchased a wicked laser core off ebay around 2 years ago, and is outputting a peak of 60mW. I posted this in the thread:
your laser is probobly outputting around 25 mW already. Most 5mW lasers are actually overspec. I LPMed my core at 60mW! It doesnt burn because it has a thick beam (which gives it good divergence), idk if its like that for all cores.
Apperently WL cores don't produce that much power, but I metered mine and mine does. This is what Cyparagon wrote back to me:
You have one day to post a video with both a core and <5mW red on your meter or you've got a neg coming your way.
Alright fist off I hadn't gone back on WL since I made my post a few days ago. I only went back when I noticed the negative feedback Cyparagon had left me. I would have been happy to show an LPM reading, which i did through a PM i sent him.I dont know if he saw it yet. Also, I dont think it makes sense to negative rep me on LPF for a post I made on a different forum. His ultimatum was threatening and was totally unreasonable. I've already recieved more negative feedback because of him. If you want a link to the WL thread Cyparagon left it in hes negative feedback note. I'm just very dissapointed and feel like all of this was uneeded :/ I mean I appreciate Cyparagon's contributions to the forum but to be honest I'm a little upset.

Wow... 60mW Core?!?!

Did you modify it in any way?

Please post your LPM reading here, so we can see... (with a cheap <5mW red for comparison)

(Sorry to hear about your neg rep... it usually only hurts for a second;) I'm guessing this thread may gain you some more... )

Are you sure this is the only reason for which Cyparagon gave you a negative rep? BTW 60 mW for the core is very weird to me...

yes it starts around 30mW and it gradually goes up to 60mW. and yes thats the onnly reason it was the only post i made. I think he thought i was trolling or something...

I think he just doesn't believe you and doesn't want you spreading misinformation.

I'm more worried about how overspec your core is.

I have a core and it is rock-steady. Haven't metered it, but it is definitely much dimmer than my other greens.

Did you perhaps snip the optical feedback wires or remove the IR filter?

BTW, rep doesn't mean too much around here unless you are planning on selling. And even then, the buyers just have to look at the notes to see if the neg. reps are legit or if they're just being goofy.

i.e. if I were buying something from you and I saw that you were neg-repped for claiming a 60mW version of a 5mW laser, I wouldn't care unless that were the actual laser you were trying to sell me.

Edit: I looked at your rep, and the two negs that electron and Cy gave you have already been balanced out. I'll give you one more, just because we care ;-)

I didn't notice earlier that the post you were neg repped for was actually on a different forum, not LPF.

Still, though, you might see if you could get a replacement from WL. People buy cores because they are 5mW.

Not to take either side, but ive owned only one WL core, it was for the host
and when I cranked up the current hit 30mW, but was down to 10mW or so
shortly after at the same current and obviously dieing..

I wont say 60mW is impossible, but find it hard to believe as last modules
I saw from WL rated 5mW, used the same 808 5.6mm as leadlight pens which
die under 200mW. To get 60mW, the IR diode would have to be rated 250-300mW+.

Another thing to keep in mind is the wavelength of the diode loses stability
when run at upper limits. A 100mW or 150mW rated 808 would not match well
with the gain medium in a state of stress.

Just my 2 cents of course

I don't own one of these... but is it possible that it is leaking IR, and more so as the laser warms up?

Regardless, SerpantSlayer post some pictures/video/lpm to resolve the situation. Looks like your rep is back on the mend already though:)

Wow, yeah cyper's negative feedback out of the blue almost made me quit this forum just after I joined. I was sure he was a troll because of how arbitrary it was.. imagine how astonished I was when I found out that people actually respect him here.

Aannnddd, that concludes the story on why people shouldn't get upset over a little green/red box on the internet ...

I think we are sidestepping the actual issue...

Why is the LaserPointerForums Reputation system used
to Rep an LPF member for something said outside of THIS
Forum...

If something transpired on another Forum it should be
handled there not here unless the same thing was
posted by the member here...IHMO

To Neg Rep an LPF Member on LPF for something posted
on WL (whether the statement was true or not) is petty
as far as I'm concerned and should not be tolerated here...

I come to your house and I follow your rules... You come
to my house and you follow my rules...

This thread is ridiculous. Forum reputation means very little and it's pointless to have long discussions about dos and don'ts of the system.
All I see here is a guy losing <1 rep power, whining about it and having his booboo fixed (and more) without providing a shred of evidence suggesting he didn't deserve it in the first place.

The real issue here is people deciding to discredit or support the unusual measurement of a laser without even waiting for the necessary information to back up either side.
