The increase on hardware lifetime is largely due to the shift from linear processing to parallel processing, and that isn't likely to ever change now. We're approaching 20nm transistor size, with 0.5nm being the limit of silicon. From that point on it's only 3D processor architecture and quantum processing for advancement avenues.

I agree though. I7 4770k + biannual refresher GPU, and a SSD to fit your needs is all you'll need for almost a decade.

The sooner the social media money-bubble (it isn't going away but when it's no longer seen as the focus) bursts the better everyone interested in the tech sector will be, imo.

Nope. That would be my iphone thinking biennial is not a word and autocorrecting it to biannual. -_-

Tried Windows 10 release preview/technical preview or whatever it's called at work yesterday, on an ok-ish laptop. It's ok, nothing overly enamouring, it's just a bit different and with some things like the start screen dialled back. It's still obviously buggy and with rough edges, and there are things I'm certain they'll fix before it's released.

I may carry on the trend and upgrade my laptop or I might not, I'm unsure yet. I have a year to decide while it'll be free. I honestly like Windows 8.1 and having upgraded twice already perhaps doing it a third time will be tempting fate too far. This laptop is four years old now and is about good for another four I reckon.
