Vista reactivation??

You should be able to pick up a new legal keycode from eBay for pretty cheap though.

Well, you can always say to the operator that you replaced the HD, and the code is not accepted, or say that you had to upgrade to a new bios for solve a hardware malfunction ..... but i've said nothing :angel:

Another possibility, now that you mention this, is that the installation was "locked" on the bios code ..... i mean, those SLP copies ..... it's used normally for avoid the activation of the product in OEM preinstallation environments (the OS check for a string in the bios, and if it find the right string, it self-activate, otherwise it ask for a normal activation) ..... but also in these cases, must be possible to activate them via phone call .....

The only exception that i know, is the bioslock system that bind the "recovery DVD set" of a specific OS to the serial number of the bios+machine ID of a specific laptop/notebook machine, but in this case, the disk set just reject to install if don't find the right machine ..... and yes, sometimes, also normal desktop users that have made a bios upgrade on a preinstalled machine, was asked to reactivate vista, but in all the cases that was asked to me, the reactivation process was performed without problems .....

My OS is WINDOWS VISTA & I have the discs to re-install the system in case of a CSF. I don't know if it would work or not, one of the computer geeks on the Forum would have to read this & give their opinion, but if it WOULD work, I'd be willing to send you the VISTA discs for you to use IF you pay the S&H costs to you & back to me. rob

If the disk is a bare vista installation disk, is the same of any other and will work (with the need to activate it at the end), but if, instead, is a "recovery disk set" that automatically reinstall the whole environment, including the drivers, then no, it can work only for your specific model of PC.

The disc I have says OS Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32 BIT
This software is already installed on your computer. Only use this DVD to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC. For Distribution Only With a New Dell PC. Is this what he would need ? rob

There are also other discs, with it ? ..... something marked "drivers" or similar ?

If yes, maybe the disk is a bare vista disk ..... if there are no other drivers on a different disk, probably the vista installation have also drivers integrated, or is just an image for reinstallation, and may not work in different pc, only on this dell model .....

I have never had a problem with reactivation via the phone support. You tell them you replaced the MoBo and they give you a new number. Problem solved

There is just the one disc. It also says "This DVDis not for reinstallation of programs or drivers. The software is already installed on your computer. Only use this DVD to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC. You said you had an Acer PC, right ? Unless somebody with more computer knowledge than me, (that means from 4th grade on up, LOL) knows how you can use this disc. I'd guess you're S.O.L. sorry.

The issue is that the Bios in your old motherboard had OEM SLIC information that automatically activated the OS that came preinstalled with it.

At this point you have the following options:

1. use an illegal activator.
2. Flash the bios with a modified version of the bios software with the SLIC information.
3. Buy another version of Vista ( at this point id get Windows 7 ) and install over your existing installation


and those are it.

@max: C'mon...just pirate it!!

Holly crap people, it's not that hard. If you have a license for it...just call Microsoft support. Any time you have a major melt down and you replace your mobo, Windows will flip out and make you re-activate your account....and if you have Vista, it will require you to call Microsoft support.

When you call Microsoft Support, they will ask you a couple of simple questions and then they will give you a replacement Key. It's really simple and easy to do....No reason to pyrate anything at all.

You can call them and tell them your system had a major meltdown.

I have done this before and they will help you out.
