Yes I know, I was sceptical about the cops watch every screen, and that there will be extra staff on this. But many people like me are concerned and the seeds will get real low here, everyone talks about waiting and see what happens. Btw I mean in sweden, stupid boring country with too many laws and safety-thingies! About 2 million file-shearer's here. This is not related to The Pirate Bay trial.

Dude, NOBODY will prevent you from downloading torrents other than your ISP (which can block p2p sharing).

Those trials and legal stuff you hear and watch on TV are just moves to scare people massively. The real pirates know this stuff and will never cease to share content.
My ISP shut off my internet completely due to illegal torrent downloading. I had to find a different ISP.
The only thing that they can detect is your IP address. Your IP address alone, will not hold up in court.

FYI: There is a privacy act that prevents your ISP from giving out information as to who you are. It is in the contract. However, if you break your contract with your ISP due to illegal downloading, they can and likely will, give out your information to the reporting agency. That doesn't necessarily mean that you will get sued. It costs a lot of money to sue someone. In the end, It's just not worth it. ;)

I never was taken to court, but I also learned my lesson and I no longer download coppywrited files.

There are extremely simple ways the MPAA would have no chance of ever getting your IP. Use a proxy, you'll need to do a bit of research to learn how and even then it takes work.  I'd explain how but laser forum so lasers only, sorry.
By all means tell me everything you know. I installed Hotspot Shield any tried it out yesterday, I don't know what I'm doing but I think it works. Before I couldn't watch south park at south park studios, but now I can...

It's not the cops that are looking, but the IPRED law gives the music/film companies the rights to search for illegal sharing of their copyrighted material. After they've harvested the IP addresses they can go to the ISP's to get information about the account owners. After that they can sue them.

In other countries with similar laws this has led pretty much to blackmailing: "Pay us $5000 or get sued for $10000 in court". Or so I've heard.

Yeah, it sucks
It sucks ballz!

Not anybody can get that information, you have to be a powerful government organization to first get a court order to get the information, then ask it to the ISP, etc. It's not easy at all, it needs a lot of annoying paperwork (your ISP is NOT allowed to give out personal information to anybody unless there's a court order that says so).

No lesson, man, your ISP never wanted to block you out, they lost money. Happy leeching!

With this new law here in Sweden you don't need to ask the police or the court to get information from the ISP's.

If the ISP don't cooperate with the law, they're the ones who get sued.

It's f'd, basically.

That's TERRIBLE, sad to hear that. Internet Freedom is getting more limited nowadays.

But all hope isn't lost yet. People have started to open up their wireless networks (and calls them ipredia) so all can access internet through them. This makes it impossible to prove who downloaded what, and at the same time you can get free internet almost everywhere.

I'm having some questions about downloading vs. uploading, are they both illegal, or is uploading only worse?

And how does the moviecompany get suspicious about me in the first place?

I hope asking this isn't against the forum rules. :-[

I'd say uploading is worse since you, yourself, are the source of distribution of the illegal material :-/ In the law's eyes I'm sure they're both equally as illegal as one another.

That's what I'm thinking, but not sure. I've believe copying files isn't illegal, and isn't that what downloading is?

Copying files for YOUR OWN use isn't illegal since YOU bought them. However, redistributing the files out to other people for free is completely illegal :p

So I'm asking: is downloading illegal or not?
Its illegal, unless you own a copy of it.

Btw i am in canada and i havent got any trouble for piracy yet.
Its not like i was sharing it all over the internet.
