Seriously...TV makers are going to start pushing UHD (Utra High Definition) TVs this year at a minimum resolution of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels.

Resolution
Two resolutions are defined as UHDTV:
4K UHDTV (2160p) has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 (8.3 megapixels), 4 times the pixels of 1920 × 1080 (2.1 megapixels).
8K UHDTV (4320p) has a resolution of 7680 × 4320 (33.2 megapixels), 16 times the pixels of current 1080p HDTV, which brings it closer to the detail level of 15/70mm IMAX] NHK advocates the 8K UHDTV format with 22.2 surround sound as Super Hi-Vision.
The p in 2160p and 4320p stand for progressive scan or non-interlaced.

So Who here is going to make the upgrade?

Here is a good article about it

Already, Japan has plans to begin UHD broadcasting as soon as 2014, two years earlier than originally planned. Also, 4K cameras and camcorders are now on the market, enabling creation of 4K content. Movies in 4K are likewise starting to show up.

Some brands are already planning to introduce a 50-inch UHD TV in China at a $2,000 price point.

without proper content no need to upgrade - that's my opinion.

also I've recently invested some $$$ in a new HD TV which isn't capable to handle UHD. Don't even know if there's already a world-wide standard defined.

Don't think I'd bother until OLED becomes cheaper, seems like kind of a waste of money. Once you've seen an OLED screen, LCD just looks bland.

I already have a 4K Sony TV and 4K Player.. ONLY because my mrs used to work for sony!! We honestly barely use it.. Mostly because of the lack of 4K content.. I still love my 55" 3DLG.. :)

Pretty much all movies made today are being made with 4k.

Really comes down to content. Right now, not everything is even in 1080 yet, so to upgrade to higher resolution seems like a bad idea.

Also the additional pixels don't help beyond a certain distance - most people have a hard time telling the difference between 1080 and 720 from beyond a few feet for example.

The upgrade would only make sense if you have money to burn, and a space to set up a proper theater.

Saw a tv at the Sony store where algorithms bump up the resolution of traditional resolution sources; DVD, etc for the large screens in UHD. Pretty nice but as I can't afford a wall size TV, not yet :D

Sounds cool, but I don't watch enough TV for it really to be worthwhile. I mostly watch shows on my laptop. Only TV in this house is an old CRT. lol

The problem with upscaling though, is at the end, you're still left with essentially the same exact resolution as before. Except instead of one pixel being of a certain color you'll have four, or 16, or whatever number.

My phone is OLED and it is crystal clear. Also what my cable company is pushing is already blurry on my plasma so more pixles wont help s@#t!

Ahh, Ok. I thought the algorithm interpolated the pixels somehow and rendered out the missing pixels, hence the 4 PS3 processors in there. Thanks for clearing that up :D

Mine is crystal clear playing blue ray or anything like that. What the cable company streams is crap.

Question... does Computer Monitor = TV?

I threw out the TV I purchased back in 2006, about six months ago, after it stood unused for five years. Have been watching everything on computer monitors basically starting with college back in 2002.

I don't own a TV

Peace,
dave
