Fiddy-

Thanks for the reply. I'll be interested in seeing your oneTesla build. After looking at their kit I'm heavily leaning towards it. I really like the fact that it has the acrylic case, fan, and the fact that it's musical as well. The pre-wound secondary is a nice plus too.

Wow just checked out that site. Any one want to buy a laser so I have funds available? lol I look forward to the build.

I agree. When I can I will purchase a oneTesla kit. You get alot more for your money.

Really? That sucks since they seem to be taking orders on their website now. I wouldn't be able to order one for awhile so I guess that's not the end of the world.

Good idea! I'd try it today if my coil still worked. TBH I really need to get around to building a new coil... either a dual-MOT SGTC or a kit DRSSTC - more inclined to go with the dual-MOT, less chance of it blowing up

Thanks :D , yeah , Ive started to make a new 300Khz mini CW SSTC to play audio with , will be a low power one , 1" CW arcs may push it harder but will need fans blowing on the secondary if I want it to stay non deformed :p .

Id go for a DRSSTC , but I personal prefer VTTCs , Way harder to kill and a lot more forgiving in most cases and way more quite than a SGTC , Just a PTA to tune xD .

TBH I never even considered making a VTTC. Do you need a scope? How's the total cost compared to an SSTC?

Ive never myself used a scope for a VTTC , just made a secondary , then just used a taped primary till I got the best output and stuck with 15 ish turns for the feedback , then moved on to trying different grid resistors to see if I could improve it further .

Id guess in the end a VTTC may be abit cheaper , But it could be more expenisve really depends on where the parts come from .

Hmmm how about the chances of parts blowing up? That's what I hate the most about SSTCs.

Well the tube will stand hell in most cases for short durations , the capacitors will stand a lot if they are the Russian RF ones and the MOT is dam hard to kill :D . I use light bulbs for the grid leak resistors and may have lost one or two but they work well and stand a fair bit

Out of the few VTTCs ive made, I have not lost a single tube , cap or mot ( my 811a has been though a lot xD ) . The most ive lost was a few primary due to arcing to the secondary as I was pushing the coil rather hard for its size and maybe a lighbulb or so .

The MOT caps in the level shifter are robust , Just have to watch out for the level shifter diodes as I lost a few of them from ground strikes .

The VTTC is a less complicated circuit wise than a SSTC but harder to tune , Not saying thay are easy to make but it uses less components and has less failure points over a SSTC and is simpler

That picture is a whole VTTC setup , at the back is the mot with RF bybass capacitors , level shifting diodes / MOT capacitors , Top right behind the primary is the main tank capacitor .

bottom left is the 811a vacuum tube and to its right is the feedback capacitor and resistor ( light bulb ) , then thers the secondary / primary / feedback windings . There is a LR sunbber on the connection from the primary to tube anode to help protect the tube encase of a tube arc over and there are RF by-pass capacitors across the 811a heater connections / cathode .

Pretty cool, I'll do some research about VTTCs before deciding. The nicest thing is that it has huge sparks compared to the secondary coil!
