I'm looking for some seasoned telescope users to guide me through the path of telescope purchasing. I'm looking to save a few paychecks and maybe getting one if I find somewhere to use it where I live now, or just getting one when I move out of the dorms. Either way, I'd like guidance through the process. What are good starter telescopes <$600. I had a Meade ETX-80 or something similar back home, might just fire her up again. Wasn't bad, just couldn't manage to get more than the 2 lenses it came with, and I'm looking into 6-8in scopes now. Anyway, any help is welcomed! Thank you!

The telescope on my signature is from orion which i purchased through amazon. Orion's website got a buyer's guide article which i would say will help you determine what kind of telescope you want to purchase.

I'm still a newbie so i cant give the details you need but i can give you an opinion based on my current experience regarding telescopes.

If I were to spend $100s on an item...I'd look for a forum that specialized in that item to ask such a question. You might even find a great deal on the item you're looking for there.

Just a thought.

I would read some articles on a telescope forum. Cloudynights has a lot of information. You can look here Beginners
They have also tons of review about equipments.

Choosing a telescope is very personal and depends on many factors, like do you have a garden ? How is the light pollution in your area ?
There is no straight answer to your question.

I do know that a good telescope keep their value. You may plunge deep in your pocket the first time.
