Hey guys,

So here I have a small problem. In the game Mass Effect 2, there's a small sound output glitch as far as I can tell, goes unpatched.

What happens is, when game is played on 5.1 Sorround system, the Center/Bass is glitchy, in the way that, sounds such as gunfire and dialogs, meant for primarily Center output, sound very "shallow", as they are not "bassed".

Data that does manage to get to the Bass speaker sounds good as far as I can tell.

I've always played the game on headphones, and managed the output as such, and everything was fine. But now I'm playing it on 5.1 system, turned up good, and since I care about sound quality, it's kind of a setback for me.

I have integrated sound solution on Gigabyte M52P-S2L motherboard, Realtek one, and Realtek HD sound managed software for it.

In every other game and application, sound is great. Just for Mass Effect 2 where only center is used, instead of both Center/bass.

Now, I'd accept a solution where one would make Center/Bass output a Mono one, that is data for center or bass gets sent to both speakers at same time. Should do very good.

But what I'd prefer, is to leave current Bass line intact, and only "bleed off" the Center output, to the Bass output.

Could somebody help me out with that? Anybody know a software which could be used for something like that?

Uhh, bump?

Incredibly, this is my THIRD thread which went totally unsanswered and forgotted. That HAS to be some sort of record.

C'mon guys, I know there's a lot of hardware wizards in here. Nobody knows how to bleed off the sound from Center to Bass?

Or is it too much to ask?

This might be kind of late, but have you tried changing the in game audio settings?

Realtek Audio Chipset -- ME2 Sound Problems

Also,

Problem #12 : Mass Effect 2 character voice volume problems / speech dialogue volume too low
Solution : For Realtek users

- open speakers properties
- go to enhancements tab
- check disable all enhancements box
then I opened ‘sound’ by right clicking the speaker icon in the system tray and clicking ‘playback devices’ (this is also accessible from the mass effect 2 configuration utility among other places in the OS)
-click on the icon for the ‘speakers’ from the playback device menu
-hit the ‘configure’ button in the bottom left corner
-from this menu i selected ‘stereo’ from the options and hit next
-from this menu i selected both front speakers as ‘full range’ by checking the box and hit next
finally i hit ‘finish’ and then ‘ok’

There are no in-game sound settings which relate to the hardware.

I did my googling, Lotus. A lot of it.

You don't see what this solution you copy pasted does?

Read this line again:
-from this menu i selected ‘stereo’ from the options and hit next

Stereo output on 5.1 Sorround speaker system results in only front right and front left speakers being active, with the rest of the channels completely shut off.

That's exactly the opposite of what I want to achieve.

My problem with in-game dialogue and sound effects is that they are routed solely on the Center speaker, and hence do not carry the "bass" effect with them. Which means that, they sound very shallow.

I appreciate the effort to help me, but I know what Google is and how to use it. If I would have found the solution there, I would not come here and ask for your time.

OK let's specify what exactly do I need.

Is there some sort of different software/driver interface, an alternative to the stock Realtek HD Audio Manager driver that comes with it?

Something moore advanced, with options and settings for more control over your sound output? Let's start there.

This may or may not help...

My current computer was custom built by some local guy (~ spring 2008). Without getting into it, I wasn't COMPLETELY pleased with it... he ignored some of my instructions.

There was a game pre-installed on it (I forget - some first-person combat shooter - that was one of the things he ignored - I said "NO software that I don't SPECIFICALLY ask for!"). It (just THAT game) had some sound problems. I didn't care much, 'cause I didn't like the game all that much (boring).

At some point (~ summer 2008) I accidently un-installed the RealTek sound drivers, and the RealTek Wi-Fi drivers (long story) (I was still getting used to Vista, my previous OS was WinME).

I didn't need the Wi-Fi (this is a desktop, but it came w/ WiFi / antenna), but I RE-installed the RealTek sound drivers from the CD that came w/ the computer. The drivers were in all probability "out of date", but with sound drivers that is not always really a problem.

Things went just fine, things are STILL just fine. AND the sound problems in that game I mentioned cleared up(?)

SO; *MAYBE* Un-installing and RE-installing the sound drivers MIGHT work.

Hmm, interesting story,

But not that related. Problems with this particular game, Mass Effect, I'm having are very widespread and everything else works fine, every other game and application, except that game.

Anyhow,

I makeshifted a solution at home. Since i have an 8 channel output card but using only 6, I added my guitar amplifier into another jack and declared it "Center/Subwoofer" output, so that there are two Center/Seb output channels now,

And since my guitar amp only plays Mono channel, I had it wired so that it plays only Center (the remaining Bass output from that second channel is hanging in the air, but I have no problems with it), and since it's a mighty amp, I turned up the Bass on it and adjusted the analog equalizer on the front panel so that Center sounds are now properly being played, with Bass untouched (they way I wanted it in the first place).

Only drawback is that, when I want to turn the volume up or down, I either have to adjust both my sorround system and amp at the same time, or Alt+Tab out of the game and adjust the slider down in the Tray bar.

Using the latter, I have found it to be very satisfying solution for now.

Everything is crystal clear and sound in the game is mega epic, and even more epic than it was in everything else.

Thanks for everybody's help on this, though. Appreciated :)

Well I just posted that because it was seriously all I could find. The only times I've encountered sound problems in a game is BioShock and Prototype. In BioShock, I had to enable "Stereo Mix" in the recording options for my realtek. And in Prototype, my "loundness equalization" was making everything insanely quiet, and the higher quality I had set in my sound card options was making things distorted.

Since the problem's been solved i'll hijack the thread with something mostly relevant but not directly. Two questions relating to audio & such. The first is an observation, the second is a slight problem.

First:
I stole a pair of Bose speakers from my parents and out of curiousity when i was the only one in the house i turned the sound to the maximum while playing music. I found that with my laptop up to full blast beyond about 3/4 of the way around the volume adjustment dial on the speakers, it didn't get any louder overall, it just screwed up the volume levelling so that when the speakers are producing only one sound it goes very, very loud and then becomes quieter when it's producing more than one level of sound. Not really a problem since I never need it that loud, but i'm curious. Why does it happen?

Second:
I have a whole bunch of speaker cones lying about, from speakers which i took apart because they stopped working. I found that if i cut the jack plug off a set of headphones, and then solder it onto a speaker cone, regardless of what speaker cone it is or which jack plug it is or what machine i use to drive them, there's a maximum volume above which it goes silent. This said maximum volume isn't very loud. If the volume is set to slightly below the maximum, at loud points in the song it goes silent and only plays the quiet parts. Any ideas for solutions?
