This uses an ARMv6 processor, it won't run anything designed for x86. Windows 8 will support ARM. M$ hasn't said which version of ARM as far as I know. When they say RaspberryPi will run Fedora, Ubuntu or other distros they mean the ARM versions.
X86 mhz & ARM mhz aren't straight forward to compare. The system requirements for ARM versions is different.
The power of the RaspberryPi is still limited but might not be as limited as it first looks. Plus keep in mind its $25 & this is the first version.

Numbers aren't everything. It's more about the architecture these days. ARM11 is a fairly new and highly optimized architecture for portable devices. Even though it may only be 700Mhz, I'm sure it's far more powerful then that old computer you described.
As for comparing it to a netbook, this is far cheaper and quite a bit smaller too. Although, the RAM might pose an issue for real multitasking. But Linux can be quite resource efficient these days, even full distros. Especially if you use a lightweight GUI framework.

Has anyone else been eagerly awaiting these? November feels so long. Going to buy one the second its out. :san: Probably a few more a second after that.

$25.00 boards. These are the first prototypes that have a
small error on the PCB easily fixed...

There are 5-6 days left for bidding and one is already at ~$1000.00
and the 3 others are at ~$900.00.
Not much of a bargain for a $25.00 item...:undecided:

All the beta boards have already had the error corrected by hand by the RasPi crew.
I'm really glad the bidding has gone this high on the beta boards so far.
Buying a final board might be hard until production can can catch up with demand but it will be worth it since the massive popularity will create a nice large community.
Community support, add on boards, HD camera & lcd modules, software ports, anything it can handle open source will provide with a large enough community.

That's how he's gunna sell them for $25.. Get people to pay $1000 / board for a while and that will subsidize the cheap ones

I like how XBMC (tv media player) didn't seem interested in an port at all... Then they heard the RasPi storm approaching. Perhaps a little fear of being left behind.
Now they even posted a video of them correcting the beta boards. Hope we get a video of pick & place too at some point.
#01 has hit £2,000 in 1 hour. Sold for £3,500 ($5,361)
All together, the 10 auctions raised £16,336 ($25,033)
