So yeah, whilst absolutely twisted on Bourbon a couple of weeks back, I thought..hell ! why don't I build an ozone generator :wtf:

Anyways long story short, stuff started arriving at my work from most corners of the world.

Some of the kit :-

I mounted the ceramic "emitter" plates inside a temporary housing to test :-

Some other parts of the kit including the blower & UV lamps :-

Hooked up the HV ballasts and fired it up :-

Only HV enthusiasts will appreciate the smell..the plates are rated for 10g/hr emission EACH...within seconds the smell of ozone was insane.

Will update when mounted in the final enclosure.

Update, now finished with the new enclosure.

Roughly mounted to check spacing ect.

Then mounted the fan & UV exposure "chamber" ..

Nearly wired up..

Final wiring ..

It lives! ..

As you've probably noticed, I'm using the 555 circuit at the mo, the Arduino works perfect, but I need to protect it from static, So I've ordered a small enclosure to protect it and I'm using the 555 till it gets here.

Thanks for looking

Re: Ozone Generator (WIP)

Really cool! I have a 500mg/hr ozone generator and that creates a crazy amount of ozone smell after it saturates for only a little while, can't imagine yours at 10g/hr each plate! Even mine creates a considerable respiratory hazard after running for not too long, yours would be very dangerous very quickly. Great to have these for ozone shocking and with yours you wouldn't have to run it long at all and the whole process of exiting the area, shocking, ventilating and reentry can be done in much less time for the same results as mine. Like the addition of the UV sterilamps too, nice touch.

Very nice! Yes, the smell of ozone is one which instantly brings fond memories. Whenever I miss ozone I just fire up a TC, hehe.

Note that if you are going to be combining those UVC lamps with these dielectric discharge ozone generators into the same housing that the 254nm emission from Hg actually causes a reduction reaction from trinary to binary oxygen, and as such reduces the overall output if it is placed after the dielectric generators, airflow wise. Likewise, you might want some baffling to keep the 254nm off of the plates. The 185nm which oxidizes doesn't travel far in air, unlike the 254nm. Though it is possible the output from the plates is so high you won't notice any reduction.

How much was one of those ceramic dielectric discharge generators? Where did you buy them from? I might want one!

Re: Ozone Generator (WIP)

Lamps in inlet, baffle to block direct exposure to HV plates, should work fine.

Thanks for link!

Re: safety; there's a rule of thumb that ozone levels should remain at the concentration where it is just lightly detectable and presents a pleasant fragrance. Once it becomes a firm scent it begins being biologically destructive and exposure times should be limited. Obviously exposure time is inversely proportional to concentration.

One project I've had in the back of my mind for a while is making a combination oxygen and ozone monitor and datalogger. I have the programming and electronics know-how to pull it off, but early (roughly 2yr ago) looks into the approximate cost scared me off. I'm curious if the cost has come down any, but given my project budget is wholly exhausted currently I am resisting. Anyway, I'm particularly interested in setting it up such that an increase in ozone would correspond with a decrease in free O2.

Re: Ozone Generator (WIP)

I was going to put the UVC lamps in the airflow inlet, would that be best?

I bought the ozone generators from this seller , and they arrived in 7 days.

Lux Nitida , hit on a good point....how dangerous are these.. respiratory wise?

Ozone generation should never be used in an occupied area, there is quite a bit of literature out there about what different organizations consider safe exposure limits. Quite frequently I see the numbers of 50-90ppb for one hour is the safe limit for outdoor ozone exposure, so indoor ozone generation studies has found that these numbers can be easily exceeded and that is for regular ozone generators/purifiers that are available commercially, something like yours I can't even imagine. People that already have respiratory or other health issues are most at risk also including elderly and children, but ozone at any concentration can cause lung, throat, nose, and eye irritation to anyone exposed. If exposure is high enough and long enough, permanent lung damage can set in. High ozone levels can also damage rubber, plastics, fabrics and other indoor furnishings.

Cyparagon i think Ped generating Ozone and release them to the atmosphere to mend the ozone holes. (Jokes)

Re: Ozone Generator (WIP)

What will you be using the ozone for?

Nothing, it was just a project...curiosity more than anything.

Ped

EDIT

Decided to go with just one plate to reduce ozone output to a more manageable level , if anyone wants the other one they can have it at cost ( shipping ) in the UK.

Re: Ozone Generator (WIP)

You may want to hang onto the second plate if you intend to get a lot of hours out of the ozone generator. The side reaction of creating ozone is the production of corrosive nitric acid gas which inevitably corrodes all but gold, platinum, or rhodium electrodes.

I had a wonderful 1g/hr unit from Information Unlimited about a decade ago and even though it mostly only got about 1hr/day use within a few years its output dropped heavily because of corrosion. It was a spiral wire-on-dielectric type construction which is far more robust (but far lower output) than the thin-film on ceramic type.

^^ Yeah I was thinking that, also, the plate gets hot within seconds.

I just read a bit on these ozone generators. So it eliminates odors?

Re: Ozone Generator (WIP)

The O3 is unstable and decays rapidly to O2 and a free O singlet, which is an extremely potent and reactive oxidizer. The O singlet then can attach onto other molecules it encounters, notably volatile organic compounds. This changes the compound, often rendering it harmless or at least odorless. O singlets cause damage to living tissue as well, giving O3 a sterilization effect at high concentrations.

So it must be hazardous to skin then?

Re: Ozone Generator (WIP)

Only at concentrations that would irritate the lungs pretty quickly. =P
