Hi, thought I'd make a thread about the Oculus Rift. Does anyone here own a developer kit, or plan to buy the final version?

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset. It's basically a screen strapped to your face with correction optics and head tracker built in, to make you feel like you actually are inside a different world instead of just looking at a monitor. I have a developer kit and I must say, the effect is truly astonishing. I definitely believe this is the future of 3D applications such as gaming or simulations.

Currently only the developer kit is for sale. This is a proof of concept device, it works but it's lacking in features and the resolution is quite horrible (800*640 pixels per eye). The final version is supposed to come out sometime 2014, and will feature a MUCH better display, positional tracking as well as rotational, and much more. I can't wait!

I'm actually working on a laser related program that uses the Oculus rift. I believe it will be very cool and fill a brand new niche gap. More info to follow! :)

Gonna try it out within the next two days.
We have the Gamesconvention in town.
I might upload a vid while I´m playing then.

Cool! Just remember that the resolution will improve in the future, a lot of first impressions are kind of underwhelming because they expect good graphics right away :)

EDIT: On second thought, it's highly likely that they will display the 1080p prototype version. That would be even cooler!

Wow, I didn't know about this! I've been looking for some sort of 3D vision hardware like this. Thanks for the link!

I'm surprised more people don't know about it, I honestly think it's one of the coolest things made in a very long time. :)

In other news my software is nearly ready for a super early alpha launch, stay tuned

I am definitely gonna get one once they announce a retail version, all the dev kits go for silly prices so I'll just wait a bit.

I think these things would really take a lot of the large outdoor landscape type games to a whole new level. I know some of the initial reviews of people using them talk about how the dimension of depth to ledges and large rooms adds a lot to the gameplay. Add that to fantasy games with large outdoor worlds and I think it would be fantastic

The dev kit is still for sale for $300 and lead time isn't that long anymore, you don't have to buy used.

By the way, I just bought vorpx which enables rift support for many awesome games, for example skyrim. How's that for a fantasy game with large outdoor worlds? Can't wait to test it out! :D

Also, my program is complete! Well, alpha release that is: http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/vrilda-virtual-reality-laser-show-player-85604.html

I wonder how this would work for a person with one 20/20 eye and one really f'ed up eye that isn't anywhere close to 20/20.

In theory it should work just like in real-life. You'll see well on one eye but not the other.
