As I hate wasting stuff, especially old tech stuff, and I need a NV camera to hunt a missing snake, I threw this together..

Ye olde CRT viewfinder..

Here it is with DX boost PSU to take 2 x 18650's (in series) upto 12v which the cam, IR led bank & CRT need..

And the completed unit CRT view

So its cost me next to nothing, and its recycling.

End of message.

+4 for not instantly assuming a 60W diode laser was the best way to do this :p

Many thanks.

I'm an old fashioned type of guy, I was reading the "I gotta coherentz LAZORR bar 60w for NV" threads , but LED's?.. cheap , cheerful & do the job perfectly.

I really want one of these.... :eg:
Maybe with a high power IR flooder (5W star)...

+1 (when I can) for recycling. Did you find the snake? :)

Thanks guys.

Gotta wait till nightfall to hunt for the snake.
Problem is, he's the same shape & colour as black mains cable, so unless he moves, I'm screwed as I have many cables around :/

Very clever and innovative. I lost a snake once in a large house more than 40 years ago, we never did find him again. His name was Slinky.

Thanks guys.

Its a Rat Snake , I have a Cali King snake as well, whenever he goes missing he's easy to spot as he's pink with yellow banding, and he's huge.

This little fella is only small, and he's black.

The IR is pulling too much from the 18650's , got a 3x holder on its way.

DIY nightvision. Awesome.

ah... I too have had many missing snakes in my house.... corn snakes mostly...

Our Cat found more than we did. He always found them then played with them to get our attention... lol

I've also heard of "odd" methods such as lining pennies on an edge of something at a doorway to a room, (hopefully) then when the snake eventually crosses it will knock some down and possibly alert someone.

Also found 2 jungle carpet pythons hiding in my dresser that had escaped weeks ago....
