I dont think they want to stop it entirely either. This update seems to be entirely optional, and leave you with a fully functional system should you decide not to install it.
Microsoft has chosen a different path to increase the number of legal users long ago - most commercially available computers, and especially laptops, ship with a licensed version of the operating system. This is just a clever deal between microsoft and hardware vendors, and it seems to be working out for both.
But even with that, microsoft does benefit greatly from piracy. For example, many jobs require experience with microsoft office, and that experience is often gained by using pirated copies in the home environment. MS still benefits from the employers legal copy in such cases, though they do have openoffice to worry about.

As I understand, it will not stop working at all - but it will display a message on startup and bug you once in while with a popup and such.
I'm sure it will be cracked and you can still run a pirated copy of windows 7 if you choose to do so.
One thing it might help with are counterfeit copies: Especially in asia i've seen lots of windows dvd's sold on the streetside - many illegal copies, some actually look almost like the real thing. I'm not sure whether any buyers actually think they are purchasing something legal or not, but this will surely sort that out.
Similar stuff is sold on ebay as well, and those scams might get a little bit more difficult to pull off now.

Was it not released yet or something? Either that or they just fail AGAIN with their anti-piracy Haven't even gotten a windows update yet Maybe they've underestimated how cracked it actually is?

Just a heads up!
In windows XP there is a time bomb file called webfldrs.xp. It activates at the end of this year and will cripple your OS if you are using XP so you are forced to upgrade to windows 7. You should find it and rename or delete it. It is in the system 32 folder, and can only be found and removed in safe mode. It's effect is that it will destroy the plug and play ability of your computer, as well as make future software changes corrupt. Your computer will slowly become brickified.
It is NOT to be confused with webfldrs.msi, which is a normal file for configuration of web based database connectivity.

Usually, when people say things like that, they make you delete a system-critical file, at least this one isn't critical, and can be replaced by running the .msi file associated with it.

Good to see you're back. Is there any chance I will be getting that 2 watt c-mount 808nm diode mailed out soon? I could really use it to repair a laser that has been sitting here wating for a new pump.

Microsoft.. uhh they fail so hard sometimes. I have Win7 but come on this is just crazy. Im not installing this update..
