I have a small vial from a thermostat.

Better question, anybody willing to sell some? I could go for some mercury. As in, a lot of mercury.

I have a few drops of it I collected via a broken thermometer and a broken little plastic novelty maze thing, though not enough to cover the bottom of a vial... Oh, and I have a fair amount in my amalgam fillings, though I don't suppose that counts.

I have about 200 grams, but it's not strictly mine. How much would you pay for it?

My granddad owned a repair shop and an aircraft shop. I guess he got it from broken equipment. I don't really know... It might even have dissolved gold in it from the old days. :D He died before I was born, so I can't really ask him...

What would you offer? I really don't know what it's worth.

Crap...my mom said no way...

(Never mind the radioactive Americium and toxic cadmium, selenium, tellurium, lead, cobalt, and antimony I have lying around...)

But you can make it from cinnabar. You can "roast" the cinnabar over a Bunsen burner or something similar (like a propane torch), and the mercury will come out in vapor form.

NOT like I recommend this or anything. If you were EVER trying to work with mercury vapor, you would definitely need a perfectly sealed piece of labware. Yeah I've got one of those, but my mom's still scared. I'll just wait until college I guess, mercury is still below indium and iodine on my list.

I have ~ 20 oz (weight) of HG I got years ago to make vacuum gauges for gas lasers. Don't need gauges anymore with all the diodes around!!!

I think the old bulbs use a filament, which creates light and heat to create light. I don't think mercury is involved.
