OK so my power supply fan is making a loud noise and only way i can fix it is to smack the crap out of it and eventually it stops making the annoying noise but i was wondering is there a safe way to stop this? i don't want to open it because it says about containing current even when unplugged, not sure if i should just deal with it, just worried about it overheating and maybe catching fire if the fan breaks or comes lose.

I have no idea if this is a Laser Power Supply Fan... a Computer Power Sypply
Fan or a Boeing 747 Power Supply Fan...:thinking:
You'll need to be a bit clearer with your question....

Don't you think spraying a liquid into something like this would result in more wrong then good? im pretty sure its all open inside

If it's dusty, then try cleaning it with compressed air and a vacuum.

It's also helpful to know what kind of noise it is(whiny, rattly, etc.).

PS: WD-40=BAD!!!

PPS: You've got a 3-year warranty on that thing, you might want to use it instead of risking breaking it by trying to fixing it.

Not sure if i would have warranty got from friend when he went into the army.

thought WD-40 would be bad :whistle:

umm WD-40 does not = Bad...

WD-40 is non conductive, because it is oil-based. using a small amount of it (that's all that is needed) on the bearing will stop the noise.

Trust me... 4 years of running a P4 IIS web server... I know!

Try changing the fan if you can't lubricate it. I'm pretty sure those ball bearings are dry from heat and usage.

I agree..............either WD-40 or silicon spray will do.
Fan swap is also easy, just make sure you discharge the caps. :beer:

Well, if you only put it where it's needed, then it should be fine, but your comment made me think that you just wanted to spray it everywhere.

A lot of bits and pieces in the power supply get hot. Hot WD-40 might evaporate. Inhaling WD-40 is bad.

Just be careful where you spray it and you should be fine. you might want to take it apart so that you can get the fan and nothing else. If you accidentally get it somewhere where it shouldn't be, you can just clean it off with a paper towel and you should be fine.

kk thank you all for the information im gonna hit the sack. i'll try the WD-40 in the morning since i have some in the Basement somewhere

Well if the wd-40 did not work there is another cheap fix.
Use mineral oil. The oil is non conductive, i have had a whole entire setup minus the hdd and dvd drives in a fish tank of it. But for your case that would be a little extreme, no noise at least.
Fill a Tupperware container with about 3in of mineral oil then sink the end with the fan into the container. let it sit for five minutes then pull it out and let it dry or at least stop dripping and put back in.
I have done this with fans that were noise and slow but after this they worked just like new.
you will have to do this once a year at least to keep them working.

WD-40 is bad for Computer fans. Just google it, and you'll see why.
The oil is not designed for high speed use, so it will decrease performance.
