UPDATE

I now have 4x MOC's 2 branches of 2 giving me 2.09uF @ 4200V

I also put a 100uF 250V motor run/start capacitor for power factor correction across the paralleled primaries of the transformers.

2motdiagram4moc.png

It was running pretty good until....the power factor correction capacitor exploded!

Does anyone know why it would of?

The HV caps exploded or the 250V cap run cap exploded?
1st. 2 MOTS creates an immense load. (load can equal heating of dielectric of capacitors)
2nd How old was the capacitor?
3rd Were you secondary side ballasting as well?

If you were using a motor start cap (electrolytic) then that's why it exploded - they're not designed to be in the circuit continuously like the metal oil filled motor run caps are.

^^ Very true.

And also to mention that a lot of run capacitors are "dry type", their dielectric is in
general composed by a metallized polypropylene or polyester film, but not filled with oil.

Also the run capacitors have a fixed capacitance, and as a rule the start
capacitors have a capacitance range written on the housing: for exampple 53-64uF

interesting, yes it was the 250V cap run capacitor that's across the primaries exploded.
i must find a metal capacitor to use!
