I have a vista skin on XP as well.  My Vista died, all it did was cause problems until I was barely able to use it there was something wrong with it. I managed to save my important info before reformatting to XP,  as far as the transparency its not to useful and it just slows real vista down.  I don't know about the skin but the real trans was useless.

i switched my new laptop back to xp. it only took a day to find a working graphics driver for it, but all the info is out there to find drivers (since hp won't give more than the "quick launch button" driver for xp)

the whole thing about it using all that ram (600mb of ram with nothing running) bothers me, what is it using? xp lists pretty much everything taking up that room (all 120mb (200 after all drivers, firewall, ect)) but vista wont. before and after tests of it playing doom 3 are significant. before it would run jumpy at minimal settings now it runs fine at 800x600 medium quality.
thats my only argument against vista
not to mention having it ask me ARE YOU SURE? when i do anything is annoying

oh and i made backup dvds for vista to install which i'm glad i did because the wifi card is faulty... it asked me if i wanted to use 2 dvds or 15 cds... wtf thats a lot

my ending argument:

yes i can't get the graphics driver to work on it... yet

Try clicking on the Aero theme to set it to that. My desktop looked like that before it rebooted automaticly after I patched the file thing.

Vista runs fine for me! Even on my mac! I just formatted the drive and ran vista setup!

My only pain is that they don't let you install vista multiple times on the same computer. For example, you can't do a clean install every couple months like I like to.

When i patched the file it asked for the windows xp service pack 3 disc. Now really.. who owns the service pack 3 disk?? I said cancel, but everything else worked. But when I went to properties and selected the Aero theme, the first time it said there was a file missing and it wouldn't load. After trying to patch again and rebooting, it just wouldn't select, and my windows XP theme was gone, all that would work was the classic theme. Maybe I can try again..

Did you use the right patch? There were two, one for each service pack.

So now I've installed Windows 7 :D

It's neat, and the only drawback I've had is that I can't find my second partition, the one with all my files :-/

it's all about windows 7

Gus when you get Windows 7 build 7000 installed give us a review

Personally I still prefer XP Pro and have unloaded about 2 dozen Vista installs and put them back on XP - If your interested in finding XP drivers for newer machines, see:  http://www.driverpacks.net/

I love my trusty XP PRO install disk with SP3 and all updates since.. slipstreamed... current install includes up through Dec 2008 - you can even slipstream all the drivers from the above site via nlite and have an all in one install - current patches with drivers - of course you'll have to work from a DVD install disk.
