Hey everyone,

RESISTOR PROBLEM FIXED!! PHOTO'S UNDERNEATH!
I am having trouble identifying which way round this resistor goes.. I know it's a 680ohm but which is top and which is bottom? Cheers.

Re: Resistor Identification!

Ah, sorry the colors are off on my old laptop, one of the brown bands looked red. I have no idea which side is top now that I'm on my desktop. Does it matter?

Re: Resistor Identification!

Does it? You tell me because honestly I don't know? I'm building a theremin and I thought they had to be soldered in a specific way?

Re: Resistor Identification!

The colors indicate 100ohm 1% either way you look at it. Test it with your DMM, it shouldn't be 680ohms, it should be between 99 and 101ohm.

Yeah it is 100ohm..i wrote the wrong number as I have them all written down on a sheet from when I calculated them.

Re: Resistor Identification!

OK good and no it doesn't matter, resistors never have polarity, they can go either way.

I didn't know you are a musician, good luck building that thing.

Re: Resistor Identification!

That measures 680Ω? Is this a trick question? It doesn't matter which way it goes. Either way, it is
going to be brown black black black brown, either 10 or 100Ω, 1%.

Re: Resistor Identification!

If you put it in backwards the electrons will fall out!

Joking aside (and that is an OLD EE joke btw), no resistors are not polarized components, they don't matter which way they are facing. Only diodes and electrolytic capacitors are polarized and require specific orientation. (aside from active devices and chips and such.)

Re: Resistor Identification!

I'm not a musician! But I have always wanted a theremin! Jaycar had a kit on special so I got it.

Thanks for all the answers guys. I am close to finishing so I'll throw up some pics and a video tonight hopefully!

Yes yes yes! I know Ped! It didn't come with a power supply and I cant find a 12V AC plug anywhere in the house so I will have to buy one in the morning as it's 11pm now. If all goes to plan I promise a video tomorrow.

Good job putting that thing together.

I see you got that resistor installed the correct way, +rep for that. :D

Let us know if it works the way you expected. For those who don't know what this thing is, here is a link to a video of Leon Theremin playing his own instrument that he patented in 1928.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5qf9O6c20o

Many of you will recognize the sound used in many great movie soundtracks such as: Rocketship X-M, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Thing (From Another World) and many others.
