I haz acquired a MOT. Lets hope I don't kill myself with it.

Many a true word spoken in jest.

Be VERY carefull with it...that thing would kill you if you got across its terminals.

Are you guys using a ballast on your mots? they seem like there producing small arcs well smaller than what I get out of mine. Also as others have said be carefull.

nah its straight mains power (240VAC) no capacitors either, it runs pretty crap on one cap @ 1uF but @ 2uF the arcs get very long.

Im a electrician by trade so i know what im doing....most of the time :)

It doesn't look like they are using a ballast in the videos. However they are only using one cap each. Therefore the arcs they are producing are not resonated arcs. If you use two caps you will get VERY NICE (VERY DANGEROUS) 12 inch arcs at 500mA.

You guys should also use a seperate breaker for the MOT so you don't break all the ones for your house/garage :)

If you guys want bigger arcs, you could always knock out the current limiting shunts. That should allow you to make bigger arcs. Howecer you will be pulling more current off the mains and your core will saturate faster. Also be careful you don't damage the primary or secondary coils if you should decide you want to do this as it will eventually cause the MOT to short out and you will be pulling even MORE current off the mains.

Yep, I have been reading about MOT's for months now and im familiar with all the hazards, my chicken stick is almost two meters long and I wear welding goggles while arcing. :)

Hi , I had a very similar flyback to the one you have , you should try and make a ZVS you can get pritty good arc from them , this was my one using a ZVs ,

Cool!, I will have a go at it :)

Guys... PLEASE be careful with those MOT's. They are very dangerous and will kill you if you make a mistake.

Yes Sir!, Watched that vid already :)

Yeh, Don't use a cap and run it straight off 240v. If you get a second cap of the same rating hook them up in parallel and you will get some massive arcs.

Did you end up finding a second cap?

Yeh, non ballasted with no caps. I'm still looking for a second cap :)

Also, I think my breaker is rated to around 15 amps so it should be fine running how it is.

You really need to watch out for how much they heat up, mine started smoking after a while so I turned it off for an hour and it was good as new. Luckily the resin didn't melt off.

Thanks for that link! :)

When you're done making dinky little sparks, you might want to move on to an open air N2 laser, also known as a TEA laser (Transversely-Excited at one Atmosphere). Look it up, somehow I have a feeling like you people might like lasers... :na:

Be safe, though! one arm rule-of-thumb, keep an eye on capacitors that don't look like capacitors, beware of UV, O3, etc.

If you guys like drawing arcs like that you should try to make a Tesla coil.

There are quite a few neat things you can do with HV, like make a plasma speaker.

I can give you guys a hand if you want. :D

And those dinky sparks? Yeah, they can easily kill you. You don't want to fuck around with 2 kW of power in an arc in the form of high voltage.

Just saying.

Mmm, yes, just because you are using high voltage for something other than making only sparks doesn't mean it can't kill you. If you do try a N2 TEA, don't forget.
