My friend's xbox 360 is not under warranty any more and has the 3 flashing red lights of death. I took it apart for him and found that one of the 2 fans was not spinning. He tried to put a new fan back in but he says it still has the 3 lights. He will bring the xbox back to me tommorrow to try and repair it again. What could be causing it to flash the 3 lights? I assumed it was the fan becasue only one of the 2 wwas spinning. I have no idea what else could be wrong with it. Any ideas?

buy some new fans off ebay for cheap then do the x-clamp fix. llama.com has a great tutorial on how to do it. if your friend wants he can send it to me but ill charge him for the time and parts it takes to do it... i also have some kits here i can send you if you want to x-clamp it yourself...

p.s. take a dmm and test the voltage to the fans before buying new ones...

p.s.s. once it rrod's its only a matter of time before it does it again... tell him to start saving for a new one...

How much does a kit cost from you? What is the voltage to the fans supposed to be? I assume 12v? He already bought a new fan and supposedly tried putting it in. Im not sure how he put it in or if he did it right. I am going to see how he installed it tomorrow and check to make sure he put it back together the right way.

ill send you one for 4$ with shipping included(will only replace 1 of the x-clamps). all you will need is some thermal paste. ive already got the stuff here so just let me know. the fans do run off 12v and more than likely the fan plug will only install 1 way.. still double check his work to make sure..

Ok i will talk to him tomorrow and double check everything. If it still doesnt work I will paypal you some money for the clamp. The fan does only plug in one way but I dont think he knows how to put the cd drive back in so that could be setting off the lights now.

not likely. the dvd drive plugs only go in one way... if you power on the 360 with the dvd drive unplugged you can get banned from xbox live... the system remembers stuff like that and will send the info to M$ once you power the console up and connect to live.. the RROD is usually caused by a GPU error but the 3 red lights is a "general hardware failure"

Hey guy's,
My brother has a old X-box (old as in .black with the green round X-box in the middle)
Now i know this is kinda off the main topic, but didn't someone post something about getting a replacement x-box from M-soft if it had never been opened and what not?
Now im by far a gaming person so i don't know much about them.
Did this apply to the old x- box, or the new one (360) ?

I have the old x-box with me now, because it doesn't work, so is this the one that had problems you thank?

from what i have read about this is some solder on the mobo get to hot and gets soft wich then get a little lose from the chip pins wich will cause a hardware error or something like that :p

u could first try some better cooling like ndrew said hope its fixed then, if not you could try the towwel trick if you feel lucky ( some 360's gets fix perm., some temp fix, and some go deeper into their grave :( wich makes them even more fawked up ) just look on youtube for xbox 360 towell trick BE WARNED THO USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK U CAN KILL THE 360 USING THE TOWELL TRICK !!!!!!!

my cousins 360 died trying, my uncle's still works after like 7 months now

or just buy a new one, i dont know if ndrew's xbox is still for sale he had a cool looking case modded one for sale :p

I wouldn't do the towel trick If I was you. It is basically melting the connections of your xbox and resealing them.

Hahahha my friend is an idiot, he just did the towl trick and it worked. Somehow I don't feel like putting your 360 into a virtual oven is good idea. I'm guessing it just like melts the solder away or something?

while the towel trick MAY remelt the solder the heat produced will also damage other components... do this at your own risk.

Its lead free solder, and weakens over time. The towel trick re-flows the solder, but its in no way a solid fix. From what I've read its hit or miss. Drew knows what he is talking about, so I'd follow his lead.

Don't worry, If my XBox 360 ever got the red ring of death I would not not be doing the towel trick. I would probably just send it to Microsoft to fix. Our Xbox is pretty old but still hasn't gotten the red ring of death, probably because not enough heat was generated to melt the solder (we don't play it over long spans).

Is there anything I can do now to make sure I won't get the red ring of death?
