My little brother has asked for a telescope for Christmas. He is 10 yeas old and would only use it for very basic viewing.
I know i got a telescope at his age and it wasn't that exciting because it wasn't very good and could only just make out detail on the moon and stars didn't look that spectacular. I was wanting something maybe a little over $100 that could make out things like binary star systems.
Im not sure if one of that price could even do that as I am not really a hobbyist in this area. If someone could point out a telescope on ebay or amazon or something that would suit those needs or even just give me some pointers.
All help is appreciated.

Thanks heaps!

OK.
When I got this a few years ago, we got it set up on a picnic table in Disneyworld's Fort Wilderness campground. Thinking my son would point at the moon, I asked him what we wanted to look at. He pointed at the 2nd brightest object in the sky.

We looked and saw a bigger blob and a few smaller blobs perfect on the same axis.
Once I dropped in the next higher eyepiece, it became evident what we were looking at. Jupiter and 4 moons... The Great Red Spot is visible.

It's a great starter scope...

No way! My first scope ever was an ETX-60. What a great scope that was! I'm sure I still have it somewhere. I highly recomend that scope! If you can afford it, I recomend getting as many different lenses as possible. I didnt learn that a new lense is nearly as good as a new scope until a few years ago, and it cost me!

If you can, buy that scope!
