Anyone here still use CB? I'm current running a galaxy DX959 with a 300W kicker as a base station.

The FCC is watching you !!!!! The CB'ers took 11 meter band from the hams years ago and trashed it :) Oh well, We still have the 10 meter band.

Been awhile since i heard talk like that, digital_blue

I used to have a Galaxy 88 with a homebuild 500W amp using 4 6LQ6 tubes.. I used to key that thing up and dim every light in the house.. Did 3/4kW (750W) on SSB.. Antron 5/8 antenna.

I also had a old Browning Golden Eagle Mk4a 40ch w/ssb. Hybrid unit with all tubes for modulation and output. I used the same amp with that. Had an awesome little Astatic D104 Night Owl to go with it..

Then I got my amateur radio license and never went back..

1.5kW is AWESOME!!

Electro - Nice! I'm currently running a cheapie palomar amp (puts out about 250), I would like to upgrade to a more powerful X-force or Texas star amp. I also have a 4-1000a tube lying around; If I get the time, I might just whip up something.

Hemlock_Mike - FCC has no jurisdiction up here in Canada. CB is virtually unregulated provided that you don't freeband onto HAM frequencies.

I built my KW 5 band amp when I was in high school -- 1965. 4 811's grounded grid at 1,800 volts!

I wouldn't say that too soon. A new law came into effect last week; it prohibits the use of handheld communications devices(mainly targeted for cell phone users) while driving, unfortunately CB does fall into this category. There is a 3 year exemption for truckers to "phase out" CB...

Elektro -- KB0WQL but I haven't so much as keyed a mike in 5 years at least.. I kind of let it slip, but to this day I'm not sure why.. I plan on picking it up again someday. I believe my license has expired, but I'm still in the grace period.. I need to renew.

Since my daughter was born, I have no idea when I would have the time these days. Lasers and music are about all I can do.

BY GOLLY - These cotton pickers can't ban trucks from the channel 19 communication thing. It's now a standard in North America!
Actually, they have done a lot of good helping others on that channel over the years.

EF --- I keep mine alive. I did sell my cross band repeater (2M / 3/4M) last spring along with the duplexers and autopatch. I haven't been on ham for years - It's become sorta like this forum. :-(

You should hunt around for a tube amp if you're running a base station. Once you warm it up and tune it up, nothing sounds better. To me, transistors lack richness of tone. Or you could build one like you said..

Very difficult to drive a 4-1000 tube with 5 to 10 watts without a tuned grid input.
4-1000's make good room heaters like ArIon lasers.

I am probably going to use a 100W linear as a preamp. TBH, I have very little experience building tube amps; I'll need to do more research before building one.

As for the "CB ban", I really hope the Ontario trucking association pushes for complete exemption from the ban. Fortunately, they have 3 years to do it.
