They are indeed up next to the 3 phase, and there is 3 of em per crossbar, so I think a phase balance cap is on the right track. It may be a lightning arrestor too, but like I said, it didn't have any fins.

EDIT: Then again, the main power feed to our area is around 22kV (Dunno why), I guess the substations must have transformers for the 3 phase too :-? Confusing stuff lol

Well, managed to snap a pic of one of them today when I was driving past. They are hooked onto the crossbar, and have a single wire going into the side of them. I really can't think what the point of them would be, unless the were over voltage protectors (Ie, if the voltage gets too high, they arc over and ground out or something)?

Some of those can be swing open fuse holders but usually the smooth things are lightning arrestors. I had one blow up in back of my house last summer during a storm. My neighbors got more damage than I did :) I only lost the cable box.

I will forward the picture to a lineman that I know. I will let you know what he says.

This was the response that I got from the lineman I know.

"looks like some thing for cable but can't really tell what it is. bad pic. where is it at?"

They are all over the power poles here in Queensland, Australia. They typically appear on poles with things like pole transformers, house connections etc on them. Not sure if they would be for cable, that tends to be a thick black cable running much lower than the power cables themselves.

And yeah, sorry about the pic, I took it on my way to dinner, and managed to park into the sun :-X

I remember after Hurricane Ike I was driving around town, looking for a hotel when I spotted a neon green transformer on in the distance. As I got closer it turned out that the transformer was on fire.

Coolest fire I ever saw.

Yeah, the funny part about that, is that he has been a lineman for more than 25 years and even he has no idea what that is. :)
