What happend with the chat?

I am just wondering, I saw an old post were it states that once there was a chat box in this forum, than it was taken off.... what happend?
I think that a chat feature would be nice.... As well as a tapatalk support...

Oh, and as for what happened I believe it was slowing the whole site down so it had to be removed.

No idea what tapatalk is, but I think there was a thread on it awhile ago.

Yeah, we used to have a chat box, unfortunately it had a significant negative impact on the forum's performance and was removed for that reason. The #laserchat IRC is just as good though.

As for Tapatalk, the reason for not having it was related to security weaknesses I believe.

I have never heard of a security weakness in using tapatalk, and I have being using it on many other forums and never read of one single problem.

Too bad, it's a great app... and I think it would be a big contribution to the forum.

Unfortunate that's just what I've heard. I don't have anywhere near the knowledge or understand of programming or security to know if that is accurate or not.

Would be great to have some kind of app for the forum again though.

I think Avery has had bad experiences with forum/plugin addons in the past, so he's pretty hesitant about adding them.

And ARG is correct, the chatbox was causing too much server load.

Also, on other forums I moderate, whenever the chat box was introduced, people stopped posting topics and just used the chat, and the "forums" became virtual chat rooms.

Well that is true, a very good reason not to have a chat.

Havent been in here for quite some time. #laserchat over at ecnet.org has been shut down, hasent it ? Trying to join gives me an empty channel.
