Should we add a flashlight section?

Should we add a "Flashlights & Other Lighting" section?

Uh just look at the off-topic sections... They're practically a cross between 4chan and a porn forum.

4chan is a porn forum...

I don't see how adding a flashlight forum will cause people to talk about lights in the laser forum. Maybe even less, considering they can all go over to the flashlight section to talk about them.

If it's in the "other" section, why not? No one would be forced to visit it! Lol

I completely agree with this.

I don't believe that we should start seeing flashlights for sale in the B/S/T section. We have a Geeks Corner which never seems to throw Computers and such into other sections.

No. Lasers are to LPF what flashlights are to CandlePowerForums.
I firmly believe these should remain apart, just like we don't have chemistry / Computer sciences / Astronomy / Wood shop sections. We have plenty of sections at LPF and Flashlights should be OT.

Yeah right!!! That's wishful thinking. I wish I lived in such a perfect world. LEDs and LDs have way to many common topics for them not to. Even 4chan references pop up commonly. Try not to be biased, and think about it for a minute.

Hey why don't we open a section for Harley Flashers..Headlights and Taillights...

Like the guys have already posted.... If I want to get info and discuss Flashlights...
I'll go over to CandlePowerForums...

If I want to get info and discuss Lasers... I'll come here...

I don't see a need for a Flashlight section here...

We do have mods, and they can easily enforce not posting about lights. I'm not trying to put a lot of work on them, but look at CPF. They have a laser section, and I have never seen a laser-related post in the main forum. If you make rules, and actually enforce them, they will be followed.

The idea to have the board is to be able to discuss flashlights with LPF members, not CPF members. I'm very positive many members here like both flashlights and lasers but can't discuss them both here because of the lack of a board.

Just so everyone knows... I believe CPF just so happens to have a "Lasers" section of their own.

Lasers
Flashlights
Woodshop

One of these things is not like the other.

Which of these things just doesn't belong?

I gotta spend more time hanging out in off-topic!
Sure, if they could keep it in the "Other" section, but you know thats not going to happen, and it will spill into the main forum. One guy spent 2 weeks trying to trade his crappy flashlights for lasers. Imagine 100 or more of them. Plus the BST will be full of people selling flashlights. I'm not here to talk about flashlights, and its bad enough most threads are filled with crap. Add some flashlight blab, and the laser discussion fades into the background.
I do fear this. 445nm brought such a bad taste of spam I don't want more.
Minimum 250 post to enter the flashlight section? Would be a pain but could impart some reduction of mindless spam?

For it. There's a lot of cross-over. It's another handheld light source, and a very popular one at that. A laser diode is basically just an LED with a built-in waveguide anyway, very similar things, so I like the idea of a place to discuss such things.

I doubt it would get very big (as flashlight people would just be hanging out at CPF anyway), and if it did get big, then we can discuss what to do about it. We have a "Laser Show" section, even though there is another site dedicated almost solely to laser shows (PL), and the Laser Show section here certainly isn't over-running any other parts of the forum or causing any problems. "Laser Shows" is like "PL Jr.", and I bet a Flashlight section on LPF would be the same, like a "CPF Jr". Useful in its own way, but in no way would replace the other.

There was a guy a while back, erms or something like that, who would post flashlight reviews in the other section, and I always really liked them, but it's hard to find them now. Well, he posted flashlights and food, but nothing else. Anyway, if he had been able to post in the flashlight forum, I think I might still be able to find his good threads, as well as a few other good flashlight threads.

As long as there is no discussion of "the torch"

We already have lasers that "instantly set people on fire" I don't think we need a flashlight that instantly sets itself on fire

I think you mean "erns". He does do really good reviews, both here and on CPF.

..... a tube of magnesium compound ? ..... like the "ten million candles" emergency torches for airports ? ..... (well, after all, that IS a handlight that set on fire itself, LOL :p :D)
