A useful little tool for people with dynamic IP's (internet addresses that change or can change) is to do an IP lookup to find out the approximate location of the user behind the IP, and then if ever in suspicion of a new user being the same person as the banned one, do another lookup on the new IP.

Example: banned user A had IP 12.34.56.78, and this comes up as Generic, New Zealand. New user B joins with ip 12.43.65.87 or 55.66.77.88, and is suspected of being the same person as banned user A. His lookup comes up as Generic, New Zealand (or a nearby area). This would confirm the suspicion of them being the same person. Also, if his profile says that he is from a completely different area (e.g. New York), this would be false/contradictory information, confirming all suspicions that banned user A and new user B are the same person.

I hope this was of use to you or anybody in need

peace & thanks

There are a LOT of people in Los Angeles. There are members from all around the metro area as well. "Similar" locations tracing would not be as useful with Arenared

Peace,

I think the only way to ensure a user never visits the forum again is IRL, illegal, messy and permanent. Still, too good for some offenders...

Hey Avery, something just occurred to me that might be an issue. My cousin has been getting quite interested in lasers (partly due to me), I've shown him some LPF threads & I'm thinking he might join up sometime.
Ok all well & good... but if my cousin joins he will have same ip. No he doesn't live with me but I've got a point2point wifi link to his house providing them with internet. If anyone is interested, via Openwrt WHR-HP-G54s at the moment, might upgrade soon.

thanks for the insight, Dave; i didn't know he was from L.A. or a big metropolitan area like that.

still, my method could come in handy in other similar situations.

peace & thanks

can you say TROLL? Lol I was tempted to say TROLL when he posted about the 400mW RPL but chose not to...

@halo, yeh true thx for heads up . its ok in this case w/ ur friend=), only bad if the person is making accounts over and over to troll or whatever lol

with things like Tor around its virtually impossible to keep someone out of a site altogether. one user kept coming back with like at least 20 Tor IP.. and their are thosuands of Tor exit nodes out tehre

i was thinking of making a perl script to collect and auto block theese but too many things can go wrong lol

overall not the end of the world when this stuff happens . worse things can go wrong=)

take care guys
