I'm going to bring this thread back up to say the rep system should probably be capped somewhere so that there's at least a margin where reputable members, new members, and questionable members can be defined. It's getting to the point where a new member will be at 10k in a few weeks while older, but very helpful and less active members have about the same.

Not that it's an issue, but the rep system has no external value other than pats on the back unless there's some way to quantify it across a lot of members. Just in the summer, we went from 10k being an achievement to 50k across a lot of the active members. The growth will only accelerate as these numbers climb, so the numbers will become even more useless.

If anything, a troll/scammer like a few of the worst ones we've had could easily get up to a huge rep number by acting fine for a short amount of time, and cause issues later when their rep is greater than a lot of senior,, trustworthy members.

Just my thoughts as the inflation continues.

Edit: I revise my opinion. The rep doesn't need to be capped per say, just the rep power.

I agree rivem that the rep system needs to be capped because of the crazy amount of rep some have. It nothing against them but were would the system stop if it is not capped. It really comes down to a matter of perspective and were we go as a community

Sorry guys... I disagree... No Cap needed.. IMO

It is not the Rep System that defines the LPF
Forum or the LPF Community...It is It's members
and their input.

Who cares if the Rep number is 1,000,000,000
or 1,000. If the Forum Software can handle it
then.. why not.

The rep system in the past was used to conspire
against members and now is less likely to happen.

If you feel that getting Reps from me offends you
please let me know and I will NOT +Rep you in the
future...:yh:

I agree, no need for a cap. The rep system is pretty much pointless by this point anyway.

I guess it is pointless, but I liked to use it as a way to judge the value of a member's posts.

It'll just feel a bit ridiculous when we get to the point where a member with less than 100 posts could easily have 20k or 30k rep when you look back at some of the older members and they have less than 5k.

I guess my gripe is more with the rep weight than the actual points. 100k rep seems fine, but +1000 from one user seems to get excessive.

Rivem, I know I given you positive rep on several occasions. I didn't know you felt this way. Sorry if I stepped over a line.

I'm not trying to say that anybody with massive rep shouldn't rep anybody or that we should stop using rep, just that I feel there should be a limit to how much rep power we have to stabilize the growth. I have no problem with any of you having massive rep.

If anybody likes my LPF presence, I definitely appreciate the a +rep on the posts they like. :)

I don't like that we might get to a point where there's such a huge spread of rep power. It just makes the rep system even more useless when somebody can "approve" so much more powerfully than the bulk of members.

A cap would just limit the spread at some point.

Ultimately, nothing's my decision, and I still give out rep liberally when I'm not on mobile. I'm fine with the system continuing as is. I just figured I'd share my opinion that some of the system's value can be preserved if there was a capped or fixed rep power.

It's good you share your opinion Rivem, if more members have the same thought as you, maybe you could speak to Avery? We could even set up a poll and if enough people say yes then it could be changed, if Avery can do that

:)

Thanks Alex. We should wait to see if anybody else chimes in though.

I think the contrary response read my post as if I was saying, "High rep offends me." I just hope I didn't offend them if they thought that.:(

I'd just hate to pester Avery with an undeveloped idea even if it gets approval from other members in a poll. We already talk about the rep issue a lot, so I think we should really come up with a good solution.

EDIT: vbulletin doesn't provide any options for this, so that's not an easy change.

Read here for Reputation factors:
https://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/main/vboptions_reputation

I guess we might have to let it go as is, but check the link out and see if any of you have other ideas.

I'm with diachi and Jerry on this one. There's really no point in trying to change things now. I believe that people around here respect members for what they do here and not the reputation they have accumulated. If capping the rep system didn't have the outcome people thought it would, we'd be back here asking Avery to do yet something else. It's been this way since the beginning and I doubt any changes are going to have the desired effect.
