THREAD IS NO LONGER ACTIVE

Hi everyone, especially c0ldshadow.
This is a great forum and in general I think there are very few problems, a minimum of trolling/fighting/scamming/spamming compared to other forums (cough LC cough) and the whole thing works beautifully. This is probably the most free forum I have ever experienced for any subject, with most people being helpful and often hilarious and opinions being voiced readily without fear of being banned just for criticising a company or anything similar.

One thing I would like however, is a change of the way the rep system works. I understand that a minimum of 51 posts before you can rep someone is a must so people do not create multiple accounts and rep themselves, but it often means that people do not get credit for helping out noobs. I and many other people try to help whenever we can, but when you are not that experienced with lasers, ever actually getting a good reputation is not easy, as the only people you can really help a lot do not have 51 posts yet. When the user eventually reaches that amount of posts, he/she will at most times have forgotten about having been helped.

My suggestion therefore is to have a "pending rep" system, where users who do not have 51 posts CAN + or - rep other people, but that rep only shows up when they reach 51 posts. In this way, people would still not be able to self rep through fake accounts, but helping someone with only a few posts would still be recognised eventually as you being a helpful member here.

Now I am NOT saying I deserve more rep than I have - I realise it is something you have to work very hard indeed for, and is often only given after a smooth deal with another member. This is why someone like daguin, IgorT and lasersbee to name a few have such good rep while many others with similar numbers of posts have far fewer.
However, I do think that rep should be given in cases where a person has really helped another member, as this means other people who come to the forum for help will respect the helpful persons advice, even if that person has not traded a lot.

Thank you for your time and I hope you will provide constructive feedback.

Seb

This is an interesting concept. I would think that it is a good idea, but make sure to add a maximum pending rep of 1 point per person, if possible.

IE one new user can give pending rep to many people, but only once for each member? If that was what you meant I think it's a brilliant addition. Thanks!
I have added a poll now :)

Well that's already implemented into the current system. You have to wait like 2 weeks to give the same person rep again.

I'd support it if it was only for the NEGATIVE rep points. + Reps don't hurt anybody and shouldn't be moderated because it would waste the mod's time for nothing.

I prefer to use the rep system similar to eBay's feedback system, I primarily rep for transactions (monetarily, or trading items). It seems like to system is too "abused" (See Village Idiot) for any substantial benefit. It is a good idea, but if the concept is too hard to implement I would suggest dropping it. It's not worth hours upon hours for an alteration in the coding so a few members could have ~1-2 more rep points.

It all sounds great except for one thing. The point system is a joke LOL. Maybe if everyone was adult about it. But you have people giving payback points, usless points, empty text points, picture points, ect.... So no...it wouldnt matter. What you need is rules to posting points. If you post a point the goes against the rules you are given a negitive and the original point given removed. But I dont see that happening either.

True, I guess it would be a lot of work for a small change.

@ BR_J, I would also like to see some rules for giving rep points, but again that would require a lot of admin time to spot and fix all illegal points. I guess we are really just coming up with ideas which would only be possible on a site with several admins working full time.
I hate payback reps  Have one myself from a certain person who couldn't take it when I neg repped him for being very offensive, pm spamming me and refusing to spellcheck.

What if you could only give the pionts if you have the points. The neg rep could only be givin to a forum represenative to deligate thus accordingly. :) If it was like this for me in the beggining then I would have been good to go ........ :) I nominate Niko he has been fair and unbias in most all of his postings.

Thanks man, but I don't see this becoming real, it would need a serious modification to the forum and I don't know if c0ld can do it.

Also, I'd have to read a veeery big thread of flaming to decide if the negative rep is really deserved or not, I don't have that much time in my hands. On the other hand I could just decide whether to accept it or not based on what the - rep says.

So far we've done great with c0ld's administration (he has already deleted some reps that were not deserved).

Yeah... I agree with Niko... c0ld has been doing a good job controlling the
Rep thing...
So what if the reps are sometimes really not required or inappropriate....
All you need to do is read the majority of the rep comments of a member
here... and even with the useless reps... you still get a pretty good idea of
a member's reputation...
For example... look at Dave's rep comments and old Wesdaman14's comments..
It is really easy to see who I would trust....

Just my 2 cents...

I agree with you guys and I'm closing the poll. Thank you for your input. It is clear that this change to the rep system is not realistic and will take up too much time.
Have a nice day ;)
