It is a better, more descriptive label. I like it.

I'm daguin and I approve of this message.

Peace,

"Blue" lasers are around 473nm. This sub-forum isn't for discussion of "blue" lasers. They are covered in the "Blue, Yellow, and Other Colors" sub-forum. These (405nm) started out being known as Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is a "brand" name. As these diode make their way into more applications it will probably end up being called violet or purple or something else.

Some people like to say that blu-rays are blue/violet to the colour. That is so NOT true, they are just plain violet and nothing else. Or am I colour blind?

It looks different to different people. Take me, for example, I have never been able to reliably tell the difference between what is "purple" and what is "violet". Some people have the same issue between blue and violet. Add to that the eye's difficulty with "seeing" 405nm. Once again, for me, I cannot see the beam (even with 95mW of blu-ray) unless the room is VERY thick with smoke.

Eventually, the market will decide what it wants to call these. Until then, we get to debate it.

Point taken. ;)

The eye can have a hard time to notice a difference of 10, maybe 15nm in the red end of the spectrum while it can easily see the difference of only a few nm in the blue end.
Purple, pink, magenta is a mix of blue and red. The colour Indigo, ~420-450nm is between violet and blue.
:)Quite interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigo

I bet that the name "Blu-Ray" is confusing to lots of people.
