My reasons for +reps

Every time someone answers my questions with a good answer, or helps me in any way I always remember and +rep them first whenever I can. I just think it's good form to do so, but I see so many people asking questions and being helped by other members who never get a rep for the help. Just giving a kind suggestion hoping more will follow suit, your choice of course, this has been something I've wanted to say since I joined close to two years ago.

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I try to rep in return both good and bad but you have to spread the rep around in equal amounts due to the system safeguards/mechanics or whatever so yeah I think it should be replaced tbh

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

Just my two cents...and no offense meant...but rep is not an obligation Alaskan. Don't get me wrong, I fully support giving rep to members that are helpful, but its certainly not a requirement. I generally don't give rep unless someone goes a bit above and beyond or do something for someone else, or for a job very well done, not just for every little thing personally. same with neg reps - I usually just give a polite fully refutable rebuke, and only give neg rep in extreme cases or someone who shows no motivation to change from their errant position on a topic/being irresponsible whatever.

But I do also have to say I do agree that only a little rep has flown lately and probably isn't bad to start spreading some around again. though it may be because there are a small number of the same people posting lately, which is probably part of it. people being unable to give it due to it being the same person over and over. I know I have that problem often, or I forget to give it all together, but that's more rare.

I take all rep stats with a grain of salt anyway, as they're not always fully accurate anyway.

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I personally used to give tons of positive reputation but lately haven't posted as much or given reputation. I tend to only give positive reputation when I see posts which give great advice, and/or provide valuable content to the forum. I tend to only give negative reputation to spammers, trolls etc... :)

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

If it were obligatory, it would be meaningless. As you, just giving my two cents on the issue, trying to promote the idea. I +rep both of you every time I can due to your both being so helpful in the forum all of the time, but the system makes me spread it around before I can do more which is great, I love being able to do so.

ultimatekaiser, 40% of the last ten +reps logged to your reputation came from me, that's how much I appreciate your posts here. There are others I try to rep every day but I always run out of +reps before I'm done. I usually find a good thread where everyone has contributed good info and rep every single person I can in that thread, until the system says no more for another 24 hours. If others would do so more often, I wouldn't have to work so hard! See, it's a selfish act after all!

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I know you do, and I'm glad you consider my content helpful!

I used to give out lots more rep, and post a lot more in the past, but as of late i spend a lot less time on the forum browsing these days, so therefore I find myself spreading less around. I'm sure there are plenty of new members that deserve some, and its good you're promoting the system, but don't take it too seriously. People always tend to get what they deserve in due time.

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I'm just glad the neg rep'ing which used to be passed around like candy on Halloween night by a few isn't going anymore. I suppose it has it's function, but sometimes the reasons for doing so don't seem as justified if you just wait a day to do so, emotion too often pushing the button so to speak.

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I usually don't give neg rep. In fact I think I've only given something like 2-3 the entire few years I've been a member. I only do it when someone really irks the snot out of me, or is generally being a jerk/irresponsible/big-time liar/etc.

I've been trying to +rep people. But it seems that I'm still too much of a noob, and it all shows up as neutral. :undecided:

You need to have 50 posts before it counts, also not sure if it counts if your rep power is less than 1.

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I always get the message that I need to spread it around to others before whoever first. Total asinine system that makes NO sence so I ignore it now. Nowhere has this silly rep system ever been thoroughly explained so we understand it. And their are some who have a very high rep count that do not deserve it. I've seen folks start a thread (last one I can remember was a group buy) and go one for weeks building buyers and rep as it goes and then quit or walk away from the deal and take the boat load of rep with them. Hate that and part of why I left last time. I also feel that religious and political threads etc. are very damaging a forum that is a passion/hobby for us nerds and those subjects always divide people and destroy trust in others. Heck the gun thread depresses me and has changed my opinion of many. Well I could go on forever with my rants and opinion but you get my point by now

What Pi said. You have some decent rep already so when it "clears"? it should show.

I hear ya but it has to be there. Imagine a group of buddies repping each other all the time. It would go into the millions! The opposite could be done as well such as negative repping the crap out of someone. Imagine kipkay with minus one billion. Would take awhile but seeing how some act on here it would be done.
I believe it's 10 reps per day and 20 reps to rep the same member twice. Not entirely sure on that though as the system may have changed a few times give or take a few years.

Edit, I think it should be changed honestly. Like a thumbs up or a thankyou or hell keep the rep system but change a few things. Such as one point per positive rep regardless of the "rep power/points"
That way no one with like 700+ rep power can't drop you down an insane amount of points.
Your rep power will be there for the sole purpose of informing people you are a helpful person and would improve accuracy of such a statement.
It would also prevent sucking up to that person just to get a huge boost.

Its still nice to get a rep regardless if its neutral, it still shows you might of helped or contributed :)

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I don't understand the limit on how much rep can be given out in 24 hours, yesterday I gave out a few and then I got the message I cant give out any more for 24 hours, this morning I was able to give out only two reps before the system told me I have given out too much again... I thought you could give 10 reps in 24 hours?

Re: When someone helps you +rep them!

I try to rep people when they deserve it, often it's some of the most helpful people, but I must spread rep before being able to give it to the helpful person.

I don't think I have ever given a negative rep, but maybe like youtube you can't give all positive?
