currently i have the forum set up so people go up levels as they get more posts. levels mean nothing other than how many posts you have.

obviously this is not a very creative way of doing things. i would make it so more posts gets you more mw of laser power, but wicked lasers already does this on their forum and i dont want to copy them heh.

we could of course get rid of the entire level thing.

it really is up to what all you guys think is best!

peace,

get rid of the post count if you can, i hate that whole thing.

the levels are fine i think. if you want to do laser powers, go for it. i thnk it would be a cool idea and relavant to the forum, start out at 5mW and work your way up to some crazy laser power ;D

I agree that it should be relevant to the forum but I think we can come up with something original if we think it through.
Won't copying them make them think too much about themselves?

Why do people bitch about post counts? Surely a busy forum is a happy one and people stick around and read more too. It's not as if you get money for posts ::)

Number of posts help others determine whether the poster is a newbie "at least to that forum" and whether his statements should have credence or not as those who have high post numbers tend to either be more knowledgable and have a "stake" in the heatbeat of the forum so are less likely to spout off nonsense.

When I see someone with 3000 post verses 30.. I'm sorry, but that carries weight.

some who may not like it, may simple not like paying the price to commit and have longevity.

Plus it allows troublemakers to keep changing thier name and still blend into the woodwork and not stand out as a newbie.

Nothing wrong with being a newbie, but those who show the need to constantly change their name means they need to change thier identity to dodge issues, which means they have issues!

Its good to make someone pay a price to change thier name!

I say the post # stays is my vote.

Most forums go with post counts and titles.  I belong to a hot tub club that goes something like this.......

up to 50 posts . ... jr. member
51-100 post  ..... full member
101-500 --- senior member.

and i dont remember what goes above that.

another one i has give stars 1 star to 5 stars.

Whatever you decide i am sure will be fine.

I agree with windstrings and senkat, so I do think we should keep post count also.

I Agree. I think it should be kept. Post counts do tell you something - however, someone could post only smiley's 3000 times and really not provide much info...

I like the levels if they are creatively connected to the theme of the forum. Check out the ranking for the members on my forum (part of the site in my sig). Some are blanked out because they may trigger unintended reactiions.

I think it is fine right now actually. The level indicator is a quick look, and the # of posts is listed. Works for me...

i like the post count thing, but i dont exactly like the level thing. i would like it to stay exactly the same as it is now, except a different format for the levels.

i cant really think of examples for this, but the mw power seems the best, although LC already used that.

anyways, keep the count.

another forum I'm a regular on and like pretty well (ducatimonster.org - not laser related) uses post counts and yellow stars that grow w/post count (1-5)

The mods and admins have different color stars (5), and they also offer a paid Titanium membership which has 5 "titanium" stars

the paid membership is strictly voluntary (except maybe for sponsors/advertisers) and goes to support the board and it includes some free stuff with it
