Imo there are there are thee factors why which a person on lpf can be judged.

1. Their tenure. By itself of course it's useless.

2. Their Post count. Again by itself it is useless.

3. Their Rep. Helpful in balancing out the other two factors available so far.

For the moment the current logic of 1k posts utilizes only one.

Why not, in addition to requiring 1k posts, also require at least 40 rep, and six months of active participation?

Of couse the latter two factors should be used to balance each other out, so someone who has say 60 rep but only 500 posts... why not let them in?

No, that makes perfect sense. There are a few members out there who IMO are extremely helpful, friendly, but don't post as much as others.

I always assumed that this was the case, so this thread OP kind of puzzled me with it's purpose, but it is a good question nonetheless.

Agreed

I rephrased that OP several times trying to get my question out, without making it sound like I was complaining that I was not allowed in the vets section. Although I'd love to take a look at it, I didn't mind waiting like everyone else until I got 1000 posts. (This of course was before I learned that the 1000 post rule wasn't set in stone and some exceptions could be made).

The OP really was to just ask why vet status is measured this way.

Back in the day ;)
With the discussion MUCH more focused on DIY
and
The posts in the "Other" section not counted
and
The general prohibition from SPAMMING up the boards with useless "me too" type posts

By the time someone made it to 1000 posts, they were most often quite experienced.

With the above conditions changed now, the 1000 posts is not as meaningful

Peace,
dave

For all that goes on in there you could just make it 300 rep and Dave, Jerry and Jay could have a personal section.:)

i think someone should just PM weidmark the password. He's been around longer than a lot of the people who have posted in the vets section. He just doesn't make meaningless posts everyday like i do to get his post count up :D

@bennett - i only own 2 lasers. 1 sits in my dresser and doesn't even have batteries, and the other is usually laying disassembled somewhere in my house :D
if you look at the module in my videos you'll notice it covered in little rings from the set srews. the same 445nm diode has been soldered and desoldered in like 30 different hosts and still works, i think it's indestructible.
