We by necessity deal with more than just diodes and rods and tubes here - we deal with optics. Many folks are doing extreme stuff with the OUTPUT of their lasers - anything AFTER the generation of the beam is optics. I'd like to see you add a section specifically for optics - lenses, beam splitters, pellicles, diffraction gratings, mirrors, etc. Is this a reasonable request?

Thanks!

Dang, we have too many sections already! Optics is an important subject, but DAMN this forum is subdivided already. Dunno, just my opinion though

i think this idea is overdue, its about time ;)

pseudonomen, i do also agree that this forum is too subdivided though.

we need to combine ultraviolet and infared with the blue, yellow and other colored laser, it needs to just be called "other laser colors", or "other color lasers"

And in place of the empty space it makes put an optics section.

...lazer.... ;D ;D ;D

The "Laser Shows" section being described as "Discuss laser shows, XY scanners, laser lighting projects, and other laser effect equipment.". "Other laser effect equipement" kinda seems like where optics should go....but still I guess "Laser Shows" isn't really a perfect subcategory for optics.

Do you really think an "Optics" section would be filled? :-/ Cause I don't really see the other subforums being overwhelmed with optics questions and threads.....

I'd love to see an optics section.

One of the reasons I jumped at an optics kit when I first bought my lasers was because one of the branches of science I have never really comprehended, beyond a rudimentary understanding, was optics. I've played around with the kit a bit and was intrigued by the threads describing collimating and anti-divergence lens arrays on this forum, so I, for one, would welcome a chance to learn more in a dedicated section.

I think we should either rename Laser Shows to "Laser Shows & Optics" or create a separate section.

What do you guys think?

thanks for the suggestion!

I have to agree that an optics-only section might be pretty sparse. Combining it with Laser Shows would give it a bit more population and still get the word "Optics" onto the main directory where it could be more easily found by newcomers interested in the subject.

A win-win proposition, methinks.

<me standing on a soap box> i think this is what needs to be done.

although, laser shows and optics are still kinda two differnt things, the ultraviolet and infaraed combined with the blue, yellow would still be almost the exact same thing, just other color lasers, the ultraviolet and infared is one of the least used sub-catagories so it wouldnt hurt to just combine them both and use the resulting free space for optics.

I agree that there are a LOT of subdivisions, and I really like the idea of combining the UV, IR, and Yellow sections into one "other colors" category, since probably 90% of the posts seem to be in the R, G or B category.

I see optics as a technical discussion about collimation lenses, using polarized cube beamsplitter/combiners, etc. Not necessarily in a "show" fashion - My personal plans are all about using optics to create higher-power beams through beam combining and collimation - I plan to use my laser to cut things, not for a show capacity (although I'm sure I'll make a show out of my cool hand-held laser knife any opportunity I safely get, but I digress :) ). I just see optics as very different from shows. I'm planning two specific informational posts - one is a comprehensive listing of optics vendors, and another is a bunch of cool optics stuff I learned from an optician friend of mine - what diopters mean, and what the math is for using them - focal distances, etc. I hope to see this added to so we can ALL increase our technical knowlegde of optics, and I for one would love to be able to design my custom optical systems from knowledge, rather than dumping out a pile of lenses and sticking them in the beam to figure out if it will do what I want it to or not! :)

So - my vote - combine all lasers not R, G, or B; Create a separate Optics subdivision. Can that work?

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!!

Lol, it works for me :D

An optics section would be great tho, if anyone has a specific question like how to focus a laser or combine the beams or expand it etc, instead of putting it all across the forum we can put in a specific spot that was meant for it so we get more of the answers we would want.

...lazer... ;D ;D ;D

Place your vote here to decide if you want it and if you do how to put it on there.
