I'll Be "Spotty" For a Few Days

My modem/router died. I'm stealing access from the hotel across the valley. It is NOT consistent. It is a bit far away

With Mon being a holiday, it might be Tue before I have the new one.

How/why did it die? Did you try a hard reset? Unplug for 1min then replug?

^ yeah routers don't go too easily, what happened? A hard reset (as mfo suggested) is better than unplugging it for 5+ mins before re-powering it because hard resetting it forces a firmware reboot - something that doesn't always happen with power loss/restore.

BTW hard resetting means taking the end of a paperclip & sticking it in the tiny hole on the face or back (depends on the type) of the router, then pressing firmling on the button for a good 90 seconds. I'm sure you know that but in case you didn't.... :beer:

Thanks for the suggestions. The lights went dark and there was the distinct odor of hot/burnt electronics emanating from it :eg:

I ran down to the store and picked up a new Netgear router that "said" it was compatible with Verizon (because I am a spoiled brat with no patience). I spent several hours on the phone with both Verizon and Netgear before we figured out that it was NOT compatible with the system in use on the West coast

We almost had a work around, but we could only make the work around effective with it hard wired to the computer. When we went wireless it started sending out the "wrong" MAC address again :undecided:

At just over 5 hours of effort (two regular tech's and two "supervisors" at both places) we gave up. I had to plug my cell phone in to keep the conversation going :shhh:

Verizon is sending a new one out.

Anyone want a nice, new Netgear wireless, N-300 modem/router?

Oh yeah -- It is missing the instsall CD. It took us almost 2.5 hours before we figured out that it didn't come with one. The CD is NOT listed in the "contents." I figured the instructions were in the clouds.

Just kidding. I can return it to Fry's.
